I guess it comes down to the degree of accuracy each of us expects and what dialog we want to hear between plays.

For me he usualy paints enough of a picture that I know what is going on to the degree that I care to know. I can see what I am "missing" when I also watch on TV, and that difference for me is not that great. What I do like is his conversational way of broadcasting, especially between pitches/plays, which is 80% of the actual time spent listening to games. But I could also do without the shtick.

In bewteen pitches, I don't care what he (or Suzyn) talks about.
But please - pay attention to the game and report it clearly and accurately. If you can no longer see the outfielders from where you sit, retire.

But how do you know what you hear is correct? Suzyn plays along with him, so if he is wrong, she never says anything.

I'm sure to be in the minority on this one, but I'll take the dopey shtick and occasional miscalls over an accurate but dry, flavorless robot with a grating voice.

She corrects him all the time, just not directly - he does tend to ignore her tho, which is annoying. But again by the time a given play is over it's not like we think it's a home run when it's a double or an out. Yeah there may be some waffling during the play itself - but I wonder how often that really happens vs. how much we think it does.

But in the end so much of this conversation is opinion. Effdamets does not care about the between-pitch banner; I care a lot, otherwise I would just watch Gameday. Neither is right or wrong.

He has four children. The multiple birth was triplets, not twins. They were born in 2000, so they turn 13 this year. (I remember some wag suggesting he name them "High, Far and Gone.")

From the same Times story I posted a link to earlier:

Sterling was divorced from his wife, Jennifer, in 2008. The couple, married for 12 years, had four children: a daughter, now [this was 2011] 13; and triplets, two boys and a girl, who were born in 2000.

No reason why a man in his early sixties can't have children ... even triplets. Clint Eastwood's youngest daughter was born when her father was 67.

I'd be willing to trade two more years of missing the playoffs if the team could have a decent radio announcer to take the reins. I'm totally serious.

But those are not the only choices. You can have an accurate, entertaining announcers.

    Sterling is neither.

I know, but everyone says get someone better, but I'd like to see suggestions of actual announcers that most people here would agree on . . . that's where it gets interesting.

There are thousands of people who announce games from college to MLB. I doubt any of them make the game about themselves and their BS schtick more than Sterling does. So take your pick. Have a casting call. Who cares? Every single announcer I've heard (except maybe Harrelson) is better than Sterling and Waldman.

No doubt, but why would that even be an alternative? This would be a coveted job, many very capable and engaging young broadcasters would leap at this.

I would start with a former player for one. And for the lead guy it doesn't have to be a former athlete just someone in the profession.

I know, just saying that for me personally his gaffes aren't as frustrating as they are for some. Suzyn is a tad annoying, as is the sheer number of ads during the broadcast, but I enjoy listening to the games on the radio. Not saying I wouldn't enjoy someone else as much or more.

In other words, I disagree with the thread title.

For me, the baseball game is entertaining enough by itself, I don't need some annoying schtick to make it entertaining. Just let me know what is going on in the game (something Sterling rarely does) and I'm happy.

So with those criteria you would be OK with John Flaherty and Michael Kay? They both fit the bill.
