I feel bad for him, but I don't want to see him on the mound again for us.

The only reason to give him more starts would be to see if he could put a good stretch together and net us a draft pick after we give him a qualifying offer and he signs w/another team.

No way that happens now- just use him as a reliever and let Warren take his starts

If they Yanks did make him an offer, I dont think another team would match it and they'd be stuck for another year. Just let him walk at this point.

I think they should make the offer and if they get burned stick him in the pen next year.

    I don't like it. $13-$15M for a reliever? Mo is making $10M.

I would love a pick, but not at the risk of tying up that much payroll, AND being stuck with Phil taking a roster spot. Just pull the plug.

I didn't think it would be that much. Ouch. Yeah, just let him go. I'd love the pick but it's not worth taking a chance you have to pay him like that.

    I feel bad for Phil.
But he's got to learn to pitch a different way because obviously, what he's doing isn't working.

Yeah, I don't see why you'd make a qualifying offer. I can't see any team exceeding that salary or offering him a long term deal that made it worth his while not to come back.

If he wasn't a FA, he'd be locked in to make 30+ starts if he was healthy next year.

QO may be out of the picture now. It is tempting for the Yankees cause they could potentially get a 1st round draft pick out of him, but it is too risky.

It's absolutely out of the picture now, even if he goes on an amazing run these last few starts (assuming he even gets them). Double reaming by Hughes - he has become the run fairy this year and the Yankees will get nothing in return when he walks.

sad but true. The question now is should he even get starts in September or not?

according to ESPN there are 89 pitchers with enough innings to qualify for the ERA title (AL/NL combined). Phil ranks 82.

even sadder Pettitte is 66 and CC 80

2 of these 3 must pitch significantly better than they have all season if the yanks are going to make up ground.

Is Hughes really going to make his scheduled start on Sunday against Chen? If that's the case, they should save themselves the trouble and just concede the game to Baltimore. I mean the Yankees are still in it, right? And the game matters, right? So why Hughes?

Probably beacuse the Yanks still think he's one of their 5 best pitchers. Though judging from Joe's comments after his last start that's no sure thing and I imagine he'll be on a short leash with Warren or Huff warming at the first sign of trouble.

He's usually good for three to five innings. Do it MiLB style and piggy back him and Warren or Huff.

It's not like they have another viable option. Phelps and Pineda are still working their way back from injuries.

Actually, innings 1-3 have been his worst this year.

    ERA

    Innings 1-3 - 5.85
    Innings 4-6 - 3.74
    Innings 7-9 - 4.35

If we are playing with the idea of crawling to a Wild Card, Phil has no business on the bump.

Hughes should be used the same way the Tigers use Smly or the Giants used Lincecum in the postseason.

Right. They do have options. Give Adam Warren or David Huff a shot and put Hughes in the bullpen. They can't hang their hopes on the idea that he's suddenly going to wake up see the light.

And now it looks like the Orioles may go with Feldman instead of Chen on Sunday.
