Who'd have thunk it? With all the hype about Hughes and very little about Nova, one would think Hughes was the next Roger Clemens. Well, in a way he is. Neither one is going to the HOF.

Clemens got 37.6%. Don't count him out yet.

Amazing, maybe he needed a kick in the a$$. Good for him.

Yeah, I wondered this same thing in May. Seems to be some correlation (though maybe not causation) around significant production bounces after he effectively is removed from the rotation.

He reminds of Burnett in a way, you can just tell after a few pitches if he's going to have a good outing or not, if his fastball is moving, watch out.

This last start probably seals Hughes fate by the trade deadline.

IDK unless they get a real return for him, he might be more valuable as a qualifying offer refusal leading to a draft pick.

Even if he accepts, we can still trade him

Who would trade for Hughes on a 1 year $14-15M deal? He's pitching worse than league average this year. The Yanks cannot risk a qualifying offer on Hughes.

Well, it depends on the rest of his season, but I can see a scenario in which they can take such a risk.
Fire Cashman, but Hal Steinbrenner is the root of Yankee woes.

Yep, if they cant get a bat to help might as well offer him arbitration to get a pick next year.

It would be great for the Yanks if he could keep this up. It would also be nice for my fantasy team as I just picked him up.

Excellent comparison. These last 2 starts have really perked up his season stats. The WHIP and ERA are both good.

If we eat some of that it doesn't look so bad.

So you'd risk him accepting a qualifying offer, getting no pick, and then trading him for fringe prospects while eating part of his salary?

You'd get better prospects by just dealing him now, while he's cheap, and you wouldn't have to take on any money.

Maybe I'm not understanding fully. I just don't understand the logic behind the qualifying offer scenario.

It doesn't matter because Hughes isn't getting a qualifying offer. What's his going rate on the open market? 3 years $20 million maybe.

He'll end the year with a ~4.3 xFIP and about ~180IP. Joe Blanton (who really sucks) got 2/15 and Edwin Jackson got 4/52 so I imagine if Hughes finishes out the year on a good note he'll probably get something in between like 4/40.

If we can't get anything of value this deadline, give him the offer.

Chances favor him rejecting it thus getting the pick.
If he accepts it, trade him at some point in the next season.

It appears to be moot as there is a trade market for him, though.

He pitched another good game. If the Yanks had any kind of offense other than an AAAA one he might of had a chance to win. Whatever Nova did when he went down to SWB its working.

i don't see that at all. i get the he's on or off tonight concept from the first few hitters, but that happens with a lot of pitchers.

Great game. Bad team. He deserved better. On a sidenote, I think there's no question that he's pushed himself ahead of Phelps.

I like Phelps, but I agree - Nova has to be back in this rotation.
