    CC Sabathia 2013 Performance Thread

CC needs to be in full sexual chocolate mode this season.
40 pitchers, ever, have an ERA+ of 130 or higher for their career. 15 have 140 or higher. 3 guys have 150 or higher - one is right at 150, the second place guy is at 154, and Mariano Rivera is at 205.

In his last 5 years first season starts, he gave up at least 5 ER in 4 of them. So no surprise there.

Maybe you should force Bradley to do something, before you give him Barry Bonds treatment. KTHXBYE.

Seeing him unable to crack 91 was rather dissapointing

Not worried in the least. If you looked up last seasons performance thread in April it would probably have the same concerns.

Re: CC Sabathia 2013 Performance Thread

To be a power pitcher, and such a large guy in the first place, it still is surprising to see him struggle with his velocity like he did today. All he really had was his off-speed stuff so it was no surprise that he struggled.

CC has been a bad opening day starter, but the last 2 opening days he averaged 92 mph and touched 94.x

Have to hope his arm strength is still building.

Re: CC Sabathia 2013 Performance Thread

CC's FB clocked in at 92.3 on average in 2012, lowest of his career, tied with his rookie year.

    His career average: 93.4.

Given his age, it's very likely we're witnessing the beginning of CC's transition to more of a finesse pitcher.

Given the (lack of) finesse he showed today, this is less than stellar news.

pitchfx has his average at 89.9 and his max at 91.7. His velocity was down more than just the normal April drop. It continues a trend from last year and it's a real concern.

Why are you concerned? He is only signed through 2016 with a vesting option for 2017. $23 million for 2013-2015, $25 million for 2016, and $25 million ($5 million buyout) for 2017. Chump change.

CC was a bit behind in his preparation for the season. Per Rothschild, anyway. I'd expect that FB velocity to jump a little in his next 2-3 starts.

ESPNs "radar guns" were my original source. I'm not disputing pitch fx.

Isn't CC coming off a surgery and start ST late? I won't even dispute the trend, but he can still be successful throwing low 90s.

Re: CC Sabathia 2013 Performance Thread

Only mildly concerned. He didn't pitch in an actual spring training game well into spring training. If his speed isn't up after 2-3 more starts, I'll be more concerned.

    -Surgey
    -Late into Spring Training

He is healthy. People are getting concerned for no reason. Now, if this continues into June, then fine, be concerned.
