    David Phelps Performance Thread

Pitched five solid innings today for 3 hits, 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. Deserved his shutout and was looking confident. Hopefully he can turn some more similar performances before the end of ST.

I'd like to see it, but I think the Yankees like his ability to be a swingman and will give Nova the first crack at it.

I've got high hopes for Phelps this year. He acquitted himself very well as a rookie, I liked his demeanor, and his #'s as a starter were respectable. He didn't go deep into games (I think partly because he was going back and forth in his role) and was prone to the longball, but those are minor blemishes on a fine season. I think he's being underrated and could end up being really important to this team.

How can you not root for this guy? Love it.

    Re: David Phelps Performance Thread

Is the increase in Ks (compared to minor league numbers) attributable to anything other than SSS variation? His splits as starter/reliever don't adequately explain the jump.

I'm hoping Phelps and Nova give us a legitimate competition for the 5th starter spot. Their xFIPs say they were equally effective last season, but I'm not so sure about that.

Not bad for a 5/6 pitcher

I really think he's a better option than Hughes- 4 good pitches compared to 2 for Phil

I was really impressed by Phelps last year...such a pleasant surprise. He has good command of a variety of pitches, and came up big in some games down the stretch last year (I remember him winning in the last series of the season, when the Yanks and Orioles were down to the wire...great composure for a rookie!). Excited to see what he can do this year!

Regardless of where he starts the season (well, probably in the rotation at this point), I suspect he'll be needed to be a regular starter at some point.

He's probably one of the guys I am most interested in following this year.

Only throwing 87-88 today with the fastball, not good. Was 90-92 vs Boston in NY.

It was balls cold in Michigan today. I doubt it was very fun to pitch for anyone.

Balls cold doesnt mean dropping 3-4 mph off your fastball. It means its harder on the secondary pitches. And no one else seemed to have the same trouble.

You realize that when your high today is your previous seasons average you're missing 2-3 mph? When he pitched vs Boston he averaged 91. He averaged closer to 91 than 90 in most of his starts last year. And could actually get it up to 92-93. This is an outlier.

I'm not jumping off the velocity bridge, but losing 3 mph off your fastball for a guy that already has a borderline fastball isn't good. Its something to pay attention to.

I'm sure you were one of those people who thought Pineda's fastball was going to come last year and Hughes in 2011. Phelps also came to camp early, and got some of the most work of anyone in camp, so he doesn't have CC's excuse of being behind.

Another good outing. Hughes and Nova should be sweating.

David Phelps performs a song that tells the story of Easter called "He's Alive." You might have heard of this beautiful hymn before, but when you hear David tell the glorious story of Jesus, it'll give you CHILLS
