Re: 2013 Brett Gardner Performance Thread

Gardner can turn on pitches inside... and LHPs attack him inside.

Right handers can pitch away from him and force him to make weak contact. He's falling toward first plate before the bat even reaches over the plate.

Funny thing is... other than that, his contact rates and heat maps look pretty much the same vs. LHP or RHP. This suggests he seems the ball well no matter the opponent. But right handers just naturally pitch to his weaker spots.

Re: 2013 Brett Gardner Performance Thread

This would not be confirmable until HitFx or PlayerFX ever comes out and is actually public knowledge, but one of the problems gardner has is that his groundballs/low linedrives are hit too hard.

He can't beat out IF hits because the ball is getting to the defenders too fast. IF hits are built on placement and speed off the bat, and I feel like Gardner rarely hits a soft ground ball. To me, his 'soft hits' end up as pop ups, and when he is lining it/ground it its when he squares a ball up.

Completely unverifiable, so just my opinion. Just came to mind when I saw his rocket that Escobar corralled today and comparing it to how I saw Ichiro getting IF hits for years in Seattle.

Just eyeballing it so I could be wrong but it just seems to me in general that he hits too many balls in the air for a speed-based player.

Re: 2013 Brett Gardner Performance Thread

Nobody can do what Ichiro! used to do, including Ichiro! today.

Line drives have much better chances of becoming hits than groundballs.

Gardner's BA on ground balls life time: 0.277
    On liners: 0.682

It's really not even close. The more line drives the better.

You don't need hit/fx to figure out Gardner's weakest area is down and away. Pitch/fx data is sufficient for this.

In his career not really, but this year he has more flyballs than usual. More line drives though as well.

It's too bad he's wearing that terrible hat in that picture. I hate seeing the Yankees wearing uniforms other that their classy uniform.

IIRC , Melky had reached the fence and the catch was all about the jump. Gardner had to time his run and jump perfectly- hell of a catch

And his main reaction was that it made up for the one he thought he had botched earlier! Pretty humble guy.

Really? I hadn't noticed, but I've only seen a few games he has played in.

"Pretty clear," meaning that the majority of fans would noticed this, right? I guess I'm in the minority then. Or, maybe you're clocking him.

Yeah, I saw all that free space in the original shot and knew I could fit something in there--the hard part was figuring out what.

    Thanks.

He currently has a .768OPS. The strikeouts are kinda alarming, but he could basically hover around .750, which coupled with his defense, would make him pretty tits.
