I like the fact they are rolling too but wonder if it is just the Twins bringing it out??

I will trust that Cashman and his team know something more than we do - Shoppach's line for the last several seasons has been pitiful. No reason to believe coming to NY would improve it.

As for improving the lineup against LHP, Shoppach's line this season against lefties is .167/.306/.333/.639, so we are really not talking about "instant improvement".

Last, signing Shoppach and adding him to the roster would require a 40-man roster move.

Fair points but the bottom line is that Shoppach would have been an upgrade over Austin Romine.

I believe Kris Nelson (I almost forgot about him in this season of revolving infielders) and Cano have both played an inning or two at SS this year, so I think the key is to say only players who have started a game at SS during the season.

His name is Chris Nelson and according to http://www.baseball-reference.com/te...fielding.shtml he never played shortstop for us. The Yankees have used at least six players at six of the eight defensive positions (counting LF, CF, and RF separately and excluding P and DH). The exceptions are three each at C and CF.

Out of the 18 players in tonight's lineups, 6 of the top 7 in RBI are on Baltimore. In home runs per at-bat, RBI per at-bat, and mean OPS of the 9 hitters, the Yankees offense is 83% to 85% as good as Baltimore's.

If you look at pure runs scored, (all that really matters) you get 81+%.....wouldn't that be the simplest way to measure?

Nunie is back, and possibly at Phelps's expense:
Bryan Hoch ‏@BryanHoch 8m Yankees lineup vs. Orioles: Gardner 8 Ichiro 9 Cano 4 Hafner DH Almonte 7 Overbay 3 Cruz 5 Nunez 6 Stewart 2 Pettitte LHP

    Bryan Hoch ‏@BryanHoch 10m
David Phelps not listed on Yankees roster

Edit: apparently Phelps is headed to the DL with a forearm strain.

No way. Joe should be fired if he doesn't start Nova in the next rotation. Nova has to get the tape for that game. It was a great win - I needed this.

Or add in Cano, call it 7 (when Jeter returns) and see if they can shoot for that 1913 record.

    Hmmm....

The Yankees have struggled to get offensive production from their lot of catchers, but Cashman does not expect to find help on the trade market or outside of the organization. He said the best option, if the Yankees were to look for one, is J.R. Murphy.

Murphy, 22, is at Triple A after being moved up from Double A. In 74 plate appearances at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season, he is hitting .297 with a .908 OPS and three home runs.

Currently in possession of second wild card spot with half game lead on Orioles.

Today was the first time since July 17, 2007 that the Yankees had 10 or more singles and no extra base hits.

I feel Romine needs to be sent back down to AAA and Murphy should be promoted. But only if he will become the full time catcher, not Stewart. My only concern is it may be too early. Maybe an August call up.

I agree that Romine needs to be sent down but Girardi would never hand over the starting catcher job to a rookie mid season. As such, the best place for Murphy right now is probably AAA.
