The Yankees went 15 straight years without a division title under Steinbrenner and it can be reasonably argued that his absence during his second suspension enabled Gene Michael to protect home grown assets (bernie in particular) from the trade market and to make non-headline making trades (paul o'neill) to turn the team around.

That's what rookies are, no one knows how good they will be unless given the chance. Just saying why not give Heathcott a chance.

Well that will be interesting to see how putting the best players on the field works with a set budget for 2014. Developing players are usually cheaper, thats all. Would love to see Romine up asap.

I agree, also if you are gonna suck I'd rather suck with rookies and see what they got then sign over the hill retreaded vets.

I think they've got their eyes on 2014/5, with Austin, Heathcott and Montgomery all starting at AA. None of them are ready for MLB now, and I don't mind a few retreads keeping the team competitive while giving them the time to prepare. I agree that, once they're deemed ready, I'd rather they have a chance to start rather than aging veterans, but this is a better long term solution than signing big money guys that ultimately end up blocking the prospects.

Oops. You're right. Same idea, though. My guess is they'll be keenly interested to see if he seems capable of taking on a substantive role in the pen next year with Mo and Joba likely gone
