Re: 2013 Mark Teixeira Performance Thread
What hasn't been particularly clear is whether this means they are forecasting Tex to be back in the lineup in early June or if early June is when he can start swinging a bat again.
It's obviously an inexact science anyway based on what people say about wrists, but if he can't start taking BP until early June, then we're probably looking at more like July 1 for a return to the lineup if we figure in three weeks of getting his timing down and testing it.

Re: 2013 Mark Teixeira Performance Thread
They should just make Youkilis the full-time first baseman when A-Rod gets back.

Re: 2013 Mark Teixeira Performance Thread
lolballs... you mean if they make the playoffs?“If it’s the beginning of May, the end of May, the beginning of June, I don’t know when it is,” Teixeira said. “But we got a whole bunch of season left, and the time that really matters is the playoffs.”

Re: 2013 Mark Teixeira Performance Thread
Wasn't that pretty much what they were originally saying anyway? It was always going to be May sometime...maybe it's just a week or two later now?
Not to be negative about this, but generally in situations like this there is no reason for the team nor the player to really state what is going on. Even if it looked like surgery was likely but not yet a foregone conclusion, the team isn't going to be too eager to say that as they try to do something in the trade market.
Not saying that they would out and out lie about it but I would think they are giving the most optimistic scenario possible.
Perhaps kind of like the ARod scenario. They still say mid-season for his return and yet went out and got Youk for $12mm (and I'm convinced is one of the reasons they let Russell Martin walk).
In retrospect, it's a good thing they did make the Youk deal given what's since happened with Tex...

Re: 2013 Mark Teixeira Performance Thread
The possibility of him missing 2-3 months of the season does not surprise me in the least with this type of injury to his wrist.

Re: 2013 Mark Teixeira Performance Thread
I am not trying to spread doom and gloom here, but this type of injury scares me. It is so easy to come back early, and get re injured. The wrist is always exposed, including playing defense

Re: 2013 Mark Teixeira Performance Thread
So we now have three players on this roster -- A-Rod, Teixeira, and Pineda -- who might be unable to play, or greatly diminished, for all of 2013. If any of them makes a significant contribution this year, great. But I'm not counting on it.

Via Buster Olney and Ken Rosenthal: The World Baseball Classic is responsible for salary paid to players injured during the tournament while they are on the DL. The player must miss at least 30 days for coverage to kick in, and the WBC is also responsible if the player gets re-injured after returning.
For the Yankees, this applies to Mark Teixeira. He earns approximately $3.75M per month and is expected to be out until late-May/early-June, so that’s $7.5M the Yankees won’t have to pay their first baseman. Given the propensity for wrist injuries to linger, he could be out even longer and save the team even more. I assume this won’t impact the luxury tax in any way, kinda like regular insurance. It’s a reimbursement, not a salary reduction. The WBC savings probably contributed to the team’s decision to acquire Vernon Wells — I think part of that money was their rainy day/trade deadline fund — but that still doesn’t make it a good idea.

Wait, I need some clarification.
David Cone just said that the MLB executives are paying for Teix' contract?
What does that mean exactly?

Re: 2013 Mark Teixeira Performance Thread
So your saying with the wildly wonderful WBC paying the mighty Teix for April (so far), the Yankees are fortunate that he suffered that injury.
The only problem is whether the Mighty Teix has two bad months whenever he returns.
IF that is the case, and Cashman has to brush off the crystal ball, they'd be wise to keep the mighty Teix on the DL on an extended rehap assignment for those 60 days.I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart
