That is so sad. If only for this reason, I had hoped they would manage to slouch into postseason play ... if only for one game. Just so Mo could close his regular-season career with a save in a meaningful game.

Now all I have to hope for is that he will actually get at least one more save before it's all over. But the way the Yankees are playing, it doesn't seem very likely.
That's when the floodgates opened tonight, when he came in, with the score 0-4. Thought of this quote, and just lost it. If he could have shagged just one, just one at home, first. Oh Gosh I'm depressed.

40 pitchers, ever, have an ERA+ of 130 or higher for their career. 15 have 140 or higher. 3 guys have 150 or higher - one is right at 150, the second place guy is at 154, and Mariano Rivera is at 205.

I'm a 65 year old man, and I was crying like a baby. It was definitely a MO-ment.
What we can appreciate now is that the Yankees from 1996-2003 were even more extraordinary than we thought.

What a class act. It has been are real pleasure to witness the making of an all-time great without any off the field hoopla. Just go to the park, prepare, do your job with excellence and class, and get ready for the next game.

I will miss Mo and what he brings to the club and to the game. Thanks for the memories.

As was mentioned in the game last night:

The ERA became an official statistic in 1913. Since then -- 100 years -- Mariano Rivera has the lowest career ERA in MLB history (min 1000 IP).

    According to Baseball Reference:

Mariano Rivera - Career Regular Season

    286 Walks
    998 Hits
    ---------
    1284 WH

    1283 2/3 innings pitched

he needs to get 2 consecutive batters out to retire with a WHIP under 1.000. Girardi you better play him against the triple-A Astros

Congratulations to Rivera for a career well done. Hard to picture a player, in any sport, in any era, who carried himself with more class; had more respect for his teammates, opposition, umpires, fans, media; and who performed his role better.

Coming from an opposing team, I have to admit he is one of my favorite players, and I'm honored to have watched his greatness.

Obviously a first ballot HOF'er but some jackass will likely leave him off his ballot just to prove some idiotic point (no one should get 100% on the first ballot!!!!111) or to draw attention to himself. When that happens, I will feel compelled to kick that person in the balls.

Agreed - that would be a good one to get.

Looking over Mo's save numbers, he has 652 regular season saves, 42 postseason saves and 4 all-star game saves - 698 if you combine them. If he can save 2 of the 3 games in Houston, that would be 700 total - I'd like to see him get that too.

I'm also wondering if Mo will take AL comeback player of the year...

    It's all over, folks:

EXIT SANDMAN: Mariano Rivera said he’s definitely not going to pitch or play this weekend. “I think Thursday was the day that I left everything on the field,” he said. “I won’t say I’m hurt, but sore. I was pitching with tremendous soreness in my arm, but at the same time, I was giving everything. I left it there that night. Now I just want to enjoy what is left of the season.”
