Rivera's "struggles" this season pushed his career WHIP over 1.000

He is on pace for about 25 more IP this year. If he allows 18 or fewer base runners in those 25 IP, he would finish at .9992

(Regardless of IP, he needs to allow 7 fewer base runners than IP the rest of the way to get it under 1.000)

Eff Leyland and his dumbass thinking. I'm going to thoroughly enjoy watching the Detroit Miguels lose this year.

It was a great moment but it should have happened in the 9th inning. And Leyland's reason was just dumb. You mean if Leyland brought in someone else to pitch the 8th and he got into trouble he could not still bring Mo in to replace him? It was a 3 run lead.

I bet his 8th inning appearance was scripted by MLB. Especially since Leyland just said yesterday (two days ago?) that Mo would be the ASG closer. Seems a bit silly to say that and then change your mind.

At any rate, Mo closed it out. Nathan was just the postgame, haha.

That was the first thing that came to my mind as it all went down. That was definitely planned.

Right, Leyland will get the blame from some Yankee fans, but MLB scripted that Rivera comes out in the 8th inning. In the end, it doesn't really matter as Mo's farewell is the story from this All-Star game which should make all Yankee fans happy.

Especially because it took place at the home of the Mets, hahahahaha. Matt Harvey and David Wright who?

So the greatest closer in history pitches the 8th inning? I'm confused.

Does anyone know what inning Mariano Rivera pitched in his last ever Spring Training Game?

just going back to his roots as a setup man. 1996 may have been his best overall season anyway.

    I'll tell you.

In his final ever Spring Training Game, the Yankees were the visitors (to the Washington Nationals). Going into the bottom of the 8th, the Yankees (in a hold situation) were up 4-2.

Now remember, this was going to be Mo's last Spring Training game off his illustrious career.

Did Joe put him in the game to make sure he pitched?

    No.

Joe waited until the bottom of the 9th to Enter the Sandman (as it were). Mo threw 5 pitches and got his FIRST save of the 2013 Spring Training and his final Spring Training save ever.
    Pardon, for us.

Re: 2013 Mariano Rivera Peformance Thread

Last night will not be remembered for which inning Mo pitched in. It won't be remembered that he was handed the ball in the last out of the 8th inning vs. the 9th inning.

It will be remembered for the 2 minute standing ovation that he received while standing inside those white lines by himself. It will be remembered for the respect and class that 50+ ball players showed him. It will be remembered for the final time the greatest closer of all time pitched in his final All Star game.

Anyone who was too busy being upset that it was the 8th inning instead of the 9th inning didn't truly appreciate the emotion of the moment. If so, you missed a great memory that you won't be able to recapture by watching it on replay.

Agreed. If he did it mid inning like some say then they would not have been able to do the kind of reception he got (no one on field).

    So true.

Leyland did what he did to respect Rivera, not to disrespect.

It was making sure Rivera got to pitch in the last ASG of his life.

It was a statement Rivera is bigger than the All-Star Game itself, and definitely bigger than a lousy SV.

Agreed, especially he's actually the one who set up the stage for Mo. He ordered his bench coach not to let the players enter the field when Mo came in.

After seeing how Mo was honored at the AS game I wonder what is going to happen On Sept,26 when Mo pitches his last game in the Bronx. Yankees are really going to have do something huge to top what happened at the AS game.

I wasn't so sure that they'd give him a monument, but at this point, it's basically the only thing left to do.
