    Where's Lou?

I'm sure he'll be willing to remind you that Frankie Crosetti wore #5 for four years before DiMaggio joined the team, and Tony Lazzeri wore it for a couple years before that. Seems they had it reserved for Italians.

The Crow continued to wear it after Joe D reached the ML (for one year) ... #9 Joe DiMaggio

Edit: And that's Selkirk wearing The Babe's number

Mickey Mantle wore #6 (I believe) his rookie season....

But let's face it, when someone says, "Number 5".... You think of the Yankee Clipper.
When someone says, "Number 7", you think of the Mick....

I never got to see any of the single digit retirees play, except #1 managing.

Although I'm sure one day we'll all be able to boast of seeing retired #2 play many, many times...

Bit of history: Mantle wore both number 6 and number 7 his rookie year. Cliff Mapes wore 7 most of that year until he got traded. Bob Cerv (also a rookie) came up from the minors and took Mapes' job and number. When Cerv went back down, Mantle took the number for good.

My Dad said he took me to a game in '52, I was 5, so I missed Joe by a year and I have no recollection of that. My first memories are of the next two years. My avatar is the heroes of a 7 year old Yankee fan who lived at 1223 White Plains Road in the 3th grade at PS 119.

There's one of him and Joe D at the batting cage, and Gehrig is using a bat to prop himself up. Too lazy to find it now, but its a great pic of those two.

Just started reading my Yankee book again and couldn't resist adding Bill. Had to use those picks because I couldn't find one of Bill playing with his number showing.

I never really noticed this thread before, but I'm a little disappointed that bobby murcer wasn't included in the '2's as he was the second best number two this franchise ever had!

Missing Dale Berra I can give a pass on, but Murcer better be there next year..

I searched diligently for a Murcer wearing #2 on his back and could not find anything, even with #1 there wasn't much. I try to stick with the theme of in-game with number showing, but sometimes they just aren't there.
I tried to go off the beaten path with number 2 trying to get Dale Berra, Wayne Tolleson, Sandy Alomar, Matty Alou (and the ultra rare Nettles #2 as coach in 1991) because when else would you see them on here, but they just weren't out there to be found. The internets only growing, maybe next spring something will pop up.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone, it was my pleasure to help usher in Spring Training and Opening Day with the countdowns.

I read somewhere that, after Mantle was sent down, then brought back up, the Yankees changed his number to 7 to avoid the pressure that came from being the next in line.

    When it goes

    Ruth 3
    Gehrig 4
    Dimaggio 5
    Mantle 6

one can see how a rookie would feel great pressure to be the next great thing.
Forgive me for taking the Contrarian view
