• The spring’s first workout went smoothly, but it’s always a little more boring when it’s just the pitchers and catchers. The position players really bring the place to life. Two interesting pitch counts: Phil Hughes threw 40 pitches and Clay Rapada threw 35. Rapada joked that he’s going to be a long man. Hughes explained that he’d already thrown six bullpens before today.

• Hughes isn’t alone. Quite a few of the pitchers seem more advanced than usual (including Mariano Rivera, who actually threw a bullpen today rather than waiting another week). Some of the younger guys in camp — including guys like David Phelps, Adam Warren and Chase Whitley who could be in the big league mix — have already faced hitters. Phelps, Warren and Whitley threw batting practice at the minor league complex on Monday. Whitley said he expects to face hitters when he throws his first spring bullpen tomorrow.

Mariano Rivera said he has made up his mind about whether he’ll play next season. He won’t announce it right now, but he will announce it before the end of spring training.

“You guys have been patient enough,” Rivera said.

• Dave Robertson has been moved to the locker right next to Rivera (that’s where Rafael Soriano was the last two years). It was suggested that Robertson moving down the line to be so close to Rivera is an indication that he’s the heir to closer’s role. Robertson said he it was simply an indication that he’s going to be picked on this spring.

TAMPA — Free-agent right-hander Chien-Ming Wang threw off a mound at Billy Connors’ Tampa area home recently and impressed the spring training pitching instructor.

According to Connors, Wang, who will pitch for Taiwan in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, is looking for a major league contract.

GM Brian Cashman said he hasn’t had contact with Wang’s representatives. However, the club will have scouts watching Wang during the WBC, despite having six candidates for five starting spots.

If nothing else, the Yankees might (and I emphasize might) give Wang a chance to prove himself to other teams - a minor league contact with an out date if he is not on the major league roster.

I loved CMW as a Yankee and wish him well no matter what happens.

We have 6 starters for 5 slots, plus Pineda is hopefully coming back AND Adam Warren is available. So, essentially, we have 8 starters and 5 spots.

As I recall, Wang was the type of pitcher that induced a lot of ground balls and double plays. Given that he could be a good fit for the pen and a starter in an emergency or injury situation
