King Felix signs 7/175 extension
-rotoworld[ Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Mariners have agreed to a seven-year, $175 million contract extension with right-handed starter Felix Hernandez.
The deal -- which truly came out of nowhere -- makes "King Felix" the highest-paid pitcher in baseball history. Hernandez was already under contract for $19.5 million in 2013 and $20 million in 2014. Now he'll make an average salary of $25 million through the 2019 season. The 26-year-old posted a 3.06 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 223/56 K/BB ratio in 232 innings last summer for Seattle.
Biggest contract given to a pitcher. Looks like they ripped up his contract for the next two seasons and the contract begins now.
I guess the market for Clayton Kershaw is beginning to set. There is no way the Dodgers let him get to the market and no way the Tigers let Verlander get to the market. Both will get deals that will equal and maybe even eclipse this.“He's a clown. Guy says he's from the 209, what the ................ is that?

It's gonna be a damn shame watching him waste his career in Seattle, but good for Felix.

Easiest non-Yankee for me to root for. Congrats!

Finally - now everyone can stop saying that the Yankees should trade for Felix.

$25M AAV at the age of 25. MLB is insane.
That's a good thing.

Re: King Felix signs 7/175 extension
IDK about the deal from the M's perspective
They had him signed for 2 more years and his velocity and peripherals have ticked down slightly. They didn't get any discount ( biggest pitchers contract ever ), so why not wait?
The plus is that at least he's still young- only 33 @ the end of the contractGreetings from Pensacola- highest per capita tattooed grandmothers in the US

Makes you wonder if the Yankees will ever be able to sign a stud (that they didn't develop) again..

Re: King Felix signs 7/175 extension
And for his age has logged a lot of innings (part of what has made him so valuable). And his FB has lost a few ticks...

That said, his K/9 trended up for the 5th consecutive year and clearly he's still effective.
Don't get me wrong, if you're Seattle (or any team for that matter) you do this without hesitation. But it would not shock me if he's more along the lines of his 2011/12 version than his 2009/10 version. And, even though he'll still be in his low 30's as this deal comes through the home stretch the last few seasons could be disappointing.
Plus, as long as he doesn't bust they can trade him towards the end of that deal should it make sense to do so.

Re: King Felix signs 7/175 extension
This is not the way I figure it.
The Mariners have extended him, which means the remaining two years are still valid, 2013 & 2014 and the 7 years don't kick in until after 2014, extending him through the 2020 season.
Felix will be 35 years old going into the 2021 season.. (he was born in 1986)Welcome to NYYFans, the place where Yankees fans come together to complain about the manner in which our team is winning games.
