Either option is fine, but I wouldn't be against him having his own day and receiving some gifts and a nice standing O from the fans.

I would like to see him sign a 1-day contract, and officially retire as a member of the New York Yankees.

This approach would truly have been the best approach, particularly since #55 is currently available.

I voted #2. Since Bernie has never been honored with his own day, I have difficulty with the idea of giving one to Matsui.

    A couple of other ideas:
    1. Have Hideki throw out the first pitch of the 2013 season against the Red Sox.
    2. When Matsui comes back for his first OTD appearance, he is the last player introduced (save the usual suspects of Berra and Ford).

A Godzilla statue would look great in front of NYS.

Yes, with massive stacks of bronzed DVDs alongside him.

I voted #2. Since there was no day for Bernie or for that matter O'Neill or Martinez I do not see where there should be one for Matsui.

Give every person in attendance a copy of one of the 55,000 DVDs he has.

I have no problem with a day for Paulie, but Tino is stretching a bit for me. I don't dispute his value to the team, but I just don't feel he had the tenure with the Yankees to deserve a day.

Of course, I am also in the "Why the h-e-double toothpicks was Reggie Jackson ever honored" camp.

He will most definitely get a standing "O" at OTD no matter what, though I could easily see a Hideki Matsui Day set up as a way to sell tickets to a non-premium game.

As others have mentioned....we have yet to have a Paul O'neill or Tino Martinez day. Someone mentioned no Bernie day but that's not the Yankees choice, Bernie never "retired"

He will undoubtedly get a standing O at OTD...I say the best one would be to just let him throw the first pitch out on opening day at the stadium.

is he even the type that would come back for OTD?

I think a statue or mural would be sufficient.

Maybe not in 2013. But I'm sure he would come to an OTD in the future.

Don't mind a "Reggie" day. But why his number and Martin's number were retired is beyond me.

Re: How should Matsui Be Honored

I'd have no problems giving him all three. I would balk at retiring his number (no one has suggested it and for good reasons), giving him a plaque in monument park or a statue or something akin anywhere.

He definately was a good player and great in the clubhouse.

The issue that I have with the Reggie day is that he was a Yankee for a grand total of five years - granted, we were 2-1 in the World Series in those five years and he had some great games, but five years?

There are far more players than Reggie Jackson who deserved a day to recognize their contributions to the Yankee legacy. Simply stated, Reggie Jackson day was George's final payment for making Reggie a "Yankee for life".

I say give him a standing O at old timer's day. That's if he shows up.

If I were the Yankees, I would hire him to be a director of scouting in Asia...especially in Japan.

I never want to see anyone else wear #55, so I guess that means retire his jersey
