Re: Alex Rodriguez To Have Hip Surgery- Miss Part of 2013 Season
I'm trying to understand. Are you saying that this should have been picked up somehow? I don't know how extensive the testing would need to be to proactively identify this type of issue, but there are limits to what the player's association, the agent or the player allow.

Re: Alex Rodriguez To Have Hip Surgery- Miss Part of 2013 Season
Assuming he returns after the AS break he'll be lucky to play about 70 games or so, looks like 3000 hits is unlikely (needs 99), though it's possible he could reach 660 HR (needs 12) and 2000 RBI (needs 50) depending on how he's feeling.

It sounds like he has what is called femoral acetabular impingement. He has a "CAM" type lesion.
Easy to look it up if any of your guys care..
As an orthopaedic surgeon myself, from the medical knowledge we currently have today, it absolutely had nothing to do with PEDs.

Thanks for your input. I will be reading up on it.
Im just hoping the cartilage is in decent shape. That seems to be the biggest question mark at this point unless I am reading things incorrectly.
edit- There is a ton of good info on this if you search. Vids, pics, and a ton of articles"A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore."
I love baseball in general and the Yankees just happen to be my favorite team since I knew what baseball was.

Re: Alex Rodriguez To Have Hip Surgery- Miss Part of 2013 Season
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...medium=twitterAlex Rodriguez is scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday to repair his left hip, a procedure that is expected to keep the Yankees third baseman out of action until midseason.
Dr. Bryan Kelly will perform the surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and estimates that he will need two hours in the operating room to address the slugger's torn labrum, bone impingement and a cyst.
"I like to tell people six months is a reasonable time frame for return to play when we're doing the procedure we're discussing with a bone correction," Kelly said. "Optimistically speaking, what we're hoping for is for him to be able to return after the All-Star break."

Re: Alex Rodriguez To Have Hip Surgery- Miss Part of 2013 Season
How common is it for that kind of anomaly to exist in just one of the femoral heads? My point being that if they were aware of the condition in the right hip, shouldn't they have looked for the same in the left hip?
Can the deformity be seen on Xray? If they had known of the problem in the left hip, is there anything they could have done, short of surgery , to stabilize the area and prevent degeneration?Greetings from Pensacola- highest per capita tattooed grandmothers in the US

Re: Alex Rodriguez To Have Hip Surgery- Miss Part of 2013 Season
Reports are that they found less cartilage damage than expected:
""Alex Rodriguez's surgeon, Dr. Bryan Kelly, told the Yankees that he discovered less cartilage damage in A-Rod's hip than expected, a good sign that the third baseman will have fewer complications as he tries to come back, a source said.
"It was minimal," the source said. "Now it's up to his rehab."
Minimal cartilage damage means "they wouldn't have to do a microfracture (procedure) or anything where they are trying to regenerate areas where the cartilage has worn away," said Dr. Derek Ochiai, an orthopedic surgeon and hip arthroscopy specialist in Arlington, Va.
"That will mean his rehab has the highest chance of successfully getting back to the level with his hip that he was before his hip started hurting.""

Re: Alex Rodriguez To Have Hip Surgery- Miss Part of 2013 Season
I find it interesting that, with the reports that the damage was less than anticipated, today's stories quote Cashman as acknowledging that there is a chance that ARod might not return this season after all.
One has to wonder if the Yankees might try to keep ARod off the field for the entire season in order to collect the insurance money.

Re: Alex Rodriguez To Have Hip Surgery- Miss Part of 2013 Season
Feel free to link me somewhere if I'm wrong, but it sounded to me like this was a noncommittal statement from Cashman that was blown WAY out of proportion. The headlines were all "Cashman says A-Rod might miss the year," but IMO his statement was more "well, yeah, worst-case scenario he could miss the year, but we don't really expect that." i.e. just hedging his bets, not really presenting new information.
I hate to see anyone get injured, but wiggling out of a year of that contract somehow sure would be nice...

Cashman tends to play the "assume the worst and be surprised by the best" card a lot. And frankly, I don't blame him. Don't rush anyone back, give them the time they need to heal up.

The MLBPA is not going to allow the Yankees to sit A-rod if he is healthy enough to play.

Hoping Arod comes back In August, plays a couple weeks in the minors rehabing and is ready for a August 31st call up. He then plays as a DH with frequent rest in Sepember and is penciled in at DH throughout the post season.
