Gonna laugh when they go ahead and sign Hamitlon.

    A trio of Encarnacion/Hamilton/Bautista. Yikes.

2/16 for prob 6-8 wins in 2 years? good deal. esp. compared to what they were getting from the likes of rasmus

It's not a bad deal, particularly since Rasmus is a bust and they got a guy that can potentially add a significant production boost without a long term commitment, but I'm pretty confident they won't be getting anything close to 8 wins out of him.

Except Melky really isn't worth 6-8 wins.
    Subtract is last two seasons.
He's worth more like 2-3 wins.
    He's (considerably) less than a 100 wRC+ player.
8 million a year for him is way too much.

Melky will live up to this contract I think. Good for him. Sucks for us how good the Jays are becoming. Now al 5 teams are legit assuming the Sox get their sh!t together. If anyone had any doubt the AL east is the toughest division I can't see you thinking otherwise so far this off season.

^ This. I suspect Toronto is much more likely to get the pre 2011 Melky assuming he is off the juice.

6-8 wins is a conservative estimate if he is right mentally. 6-8 for 2 years i mean
    always reasonable

thats a big contract for a mediocre player (when clean)

he won't lose the roids muscles until he gets older. he will lose the inflated babip though, and people will say it's because he's not on roids anymore.

Re: Melky Cabrera signed by Blue Jays

I think it's presumptuous to completely discount his past 2 seasons. No one knows when he started taking PEDs (or that he ever stopped), he could have been using them his whole career. More importantly we don't know the impact of PEDs. I think it's safe to say that no drug or supplement exists where the expected performance increase turns a 4th outfielder into an all-star. There was most likely a skill increase that will carry over to next year regardless of what he's taking. I think it's a great deal for the Blue Jays. 3 wins over 2 seasons is the break even point on the contract.

He'd better get his money back if he was using his whole career.
    Barely an 85 wRC+ player before 2011.....
8 million is way too much for this guy.
I'll go as far to say, the Blue Jays will either trade him away before the end of 2013 or release him outright within the same time period.
    He's not good.

Damn. I really wanted the Yankees to get him.

Re: Melky Cabrera signed by Blue Jays

Players improving as they turn 26 isn't uncommon. Nobody knows how much of his improvement was due to skill change and how much was due to PEDs. He would have gotten around 90 million had he not been suspended. This is a fair deal then if 15% of his performance increase was due to a change in skill and 85% due to PEDs. I think it's a really good bet that the split is not that dramatic.

I think it remains to be seen how he performs clean. (Of course he could just HGH it)

That said, it is silly to quote pre 2011....250 games is a damn good sample size. It is clear he broke out....Jays are sure a lot faster, if nothing else.
    Goin for 2<strike>7</strike>8!
