Re: 2013 World Baseball Classic Thread
Poor Italy.
In Round 2, the Italians had a lead in both games against the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico and lost both of them and the game.
Italia goes home after a 4-3 loss to Puerto Rico.
Italy scored their only runs in the 5th thanks to a bases-clearing double from Chicago Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo.
However, San Marino IF Anthony Granato had a fielding error that allowed St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina in the 6th to help Puerto Rico get on the board.
Italy had three errors in the ballgame.
Puerto Rico punished them in the eighth with three runs thanks to a RBI force out from Cleveland Indians SS Mike Aviles, a sac fly from Luis Figueroa and a RBI single from Andy Gonzalez.
Puerto Rico will face the loser of the Dominican Republic vs. United States on March 15 clash to see who will get one of the semifinal spots to San Francisco from Round 2, Pool 2.
As for Italy, they will finish in the Top 8 after two 10th place finishes in their first two WBC appearances. It's not the 27 World Championships that drive the New York Yankees. It's the 28th.
Every year is The Year. Go Yankees.

Re: 2013 World Baseball Classic Thread
David Wright has been scratched from Team USA's lineup Thursday due to a sore back.
The injury doesn't sound like a big concern, as Wright was able to take batting practice before the game, but it's obviously a notable blow to USA's hopes in their attempt to knock off the Dominican Republic. Wright will be replaced at third base by the uninspiring Willie Bloomquist. Mar 14 - 6:55 PM

Re: 2013 World Baseball Classic Thread
Yeah, it's a weird contrast as to how huge this thing is in some countries and here it's barely followed relatively speaking.
The last WBC championship game had 90 million viewers. A typical World Series game now gets 12 million. The Super Bowl had 108 million in the US this year...so it's not really that far behind.
I'm surprised how addictive the games are...on paper I always thought it was contrived and basically meaningless, but these games are really fun to watch due mainly to the enthusiasm and intensity of some of those teams and crowds.

Leaving the bases loaded in the first is looming large for team USA right now.
