    When did they start doing this? I don't remember hearing about "finalists" in any past years.

    It's just so they can put it on TV. The winners have obviously already been determined since voting ends the day after the Regular Season ends. They showed the top 3-5 in alphabetical order for each award but nothing about the actual voting process changed.
