Should the Yankees extend Hughes?

yes. i feel like he'd take a 5 year 20-30 million dollar deal. he's entering his prime years, and that's a bargain for someone who looks like he can be at the very least an innings eater.
forget his injury history, you can either take that risk and lock up a guy who may or may not make that deal look like a steal-- like cano's contract--or he can have a breakout year next year, and just force the yankees to shell out more cash.

Hughes could/should probably be in that 40 million dollar range...and I still wouldn't sign him to that now.

He's a servicable pitcher, but I'd wait to see what the open market is offering first.

If he has another season like 2012, I'm thinking 5 years/$40 million at least, if only because he doesn't turn 28 until the end of June, 2014. If he's better next year, or even if he ends up with the same numbers but doesn't have a disaster month like he had this past April, I can easily see him getting into the $10-15 million range over 4-6 years.

Agreed. I don't like the policy, but Hughes is not a guy to bend it for. End of the day, he is a league average pitcher. (or has been the last few years)

Nice job staying healthy this season, but not a guy to rush to lock up.

Didn't they extend CC? I mean granted he was going to optout if they didn't but I thought technically it was an extension before he opted out. Not that Hugehs has that kind of levergae.

But yeah, I don't see them extending him either. He pitches well again next year Yanks will try and lock him up then but it isn't like Hughes is going to give them a home town discount so why add the injury risk?

your question was do they lock him up now. i thought 5/30 was reasonable right now at 6 AAV. why then if he puts up another solid season, an AAV of 8 justifies his agent keeping his credentials?

The answer to this question is the answer to a more pertinent question - "Do you see Phil Hughes as a significant cog in your pitching rotation in 2014?"

I, for one, do not - while Hughes has been very serviceable, there have been too many 5.1 IP appearances for me. He pitched 191.1 innings in 32 starts this year - that averages put to 5.97 IPS.

In 2014, we will have CC to head the staff. Assuming the Yankees sign Kuroda to a multi-year contract this off-season (he has earned one and deserves it), he's the likely #2. Pineda is the logical #3 at this point.

This spot is one of the places that the Yankees can save some money in their quest to get below $189M, so I believe that issue will be a big factor in their decision as well. With David Phelps, Adam Warren, Nik Turley, and Jose Ramirez (not to mention the two B's and Ivan Nova) in the pipeline, I find it hard to believe that the Yankees will make extending Phil Hughes a priority - in fact, I would be very surprised if he does not end up as part of a trade this winter.
