Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
Earlier this morning, I read that Donald Trump had an "October surprise" that was going to be announced soon. At the time, one of the rumored topics was the New York Yankees, which got me wondering if perhaps he was going to announce his that he was buying the team. This obviously turned out not to be the case, but I still can't help but wonder if we could see this team on the market in the near future. Could the challenges of a changing market, plus the chance for a huge pay day, outweigh any satisfaction that the sons get from running the team?

Re: Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
In order for the Steinbrenners to sell the Yankees there has to be a buyer. There are few people rich enough to buy the club. It is reported that the Yankees are worth about $1.5 - 2 billion and the Yes network is also worth about the same.
When George put a group of investors together in 1972 they purchased the Yankees from CBS for a reportd $8.8 million.
Anyone buying the club (or/and the Yes network) would be doing it for a pure business motive. I doubt itthat they would be as free with their spending as the Steinbrenner family has. They certainly wouldn't spend $200 million annually on player payroll and I seriously doubt they would overspend for established star players. Just my opinion.

Re: Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
The Yankees are the Mona Lisa of baseball why would they want to sell them
The real reason why the Yankees keep winning is cause the other team can't stop staring at the damn pinstripes

Re: Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
The Steinbrenners, in my opinion are more likely to invest money in the club than are many other potential suiters for the club. I simply feel most wealthy potential buters would be more interested in making or at least not losing money than would be the Steinbrenners, but hey, my opinion is only conjecture, We'll never know till it happens

Re: Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
Are you kidding? The list starts with the Dolans gang who own the Knicks, Rangers, MSG, Radio City and Cablevision. They make money with teams that don't always win. Check out NYR prices, if they ever have a season, in the renovated Garden. (which is a tax free property).
There were many bidders for the Mets, and they suck. Several high profile Wall Streeters tried to lift the team from Wilpon. Steven Cohen tried to construct a complicated deal that would have gained majority control but Wilpon caught on ...Cohen is worth $8.3 billion personally. David Einhorm is another billionaire that wants to be a majority owner of the Mets ...he is rich enough and smart enough not to be a minority partner of the Wilpons.
Even Mark Cuban had interest in the Mutts. Just imagine interest in the Yankees !

Re: Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
Anyone who would buy the Yankees would have to do so with cash, or a lot of it... I can't see anyone buying the team without a significant down payment, simply because making the payments on the note to buy the team (or else go into default) will become the prime goal of the new owner.
I don't think you'll find a sole owner for club, just a bunch of rich guys who will pool their play money together and buy the team.
Cheers!

Re: Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
I don't understand your answer, because that's exactly what I am saying. The Yankees would get owners like the Dolans andWilpons who wouldn't do what is necessary to put a winning team on the field. Lets stick, at least for the time being, with the Steinbrenner family

Re: Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
What is not to understand. A hedge fund billionaire like Cohen has a lot more money than the Steinbrenners do. In the MLB world there were plenty of owners with deeper pockets than George....I don't see Hank or Hal with George's instincts.
Wasn't the question "Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?". My answer is yes, and there are plenty of buyers out there.
The question was not "What is best for the Yankees"?

Re: Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
I disagree about Dolan, he is an idiot and makes horrific personnel decisions, but he does put the money needed into his teams. He is pretty much the same as george was in that aspect, the pre 1996 george that the yankees have done a great job of making people forget existed

Re: Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
really an odd thing to say when he just turned down Lin for rather idiotic reasons and the Knicks are 7th in payroll in NBA.
Dolan has been running the Knicks for profit... not much else. If his face on the sidelines, on the rare occasions he attends games, is any guide, he doesn't even like basketball.

Re: Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
Dolan has spent a fortune over the cap, and he is at every Knicks game pretty much. He is a moron that I agree with, but he is incompetent not a guy that does not care.
His payroll is 7th because they are/were finally trying to clear cap space to actualy build a team, but of course then he can't help himself and will go get a guy that no one else would touch with a ten foot pole.

Re: Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
Well, no one was suggesting that he was going to annouce a purchase of the Yankees, that was purely my own wild speculaiton. That said, Forbes lists his net worth as 3.1 Billion.

Re: Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
yes, and every time trump learns that a forbes editor for the next edition is thinking of suggesting his net worth is anything less than a billion, he immediately has his lawyers send calls and letters threatening multi-million dollar lawsuits. The guy is a total fraud.
If you borrow 50 million bucks to buy a 50 million dollar casino that loses 10 million per year, what do you suppose your net worth would be? According to Trump the answer would be 50 million

Re: Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
In light of the recent discussion about News Corps potentially obtaining a controlling share of YES, I think it is woth revisiting the question of whether or not the Yankees will eventually be for sale...

According to Wallace Matthews, the possibility is very real:

Re: Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
Well, the Steinbrenner family got "lucky" that George died when he did, because thanks to G.W. Bush there was no estate tax that year. So the kids got the Yankees free and clear. If and when they do sell, the tax bill will be pretty astronomical

Re: Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
Well, in this era of 'tax the rich', let's sat capital gains which was lowered by Bush to 15%..went all of the way up to Reagan's 28%. (of course in the current climate , there are calls to put it up to 35%...but I'll steer clear of politics.)
Let's say the Yankees are worth $4 billion for the whole package. And for arguments sake, George paid $10 million. At 15%, the tax would be $600 million...and at 28% it would be 1.1 billion. An extra $500 million split between 3 kids would buy a few nice Christmas presents.

Re: Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
My gut feeling...is that the team will be sold within the next five years. I hope whoever does buy it has the passion to win that George did....but also stays away from making some of the mistakes George did.

Re: Will the Steinbrenners sell the Yankees?
I agree. As a big Rangers fan I can say that it's not that they never dumped money into the team, they just made poor decisions. Lately the decisions have been much better so he either got smarter or decided to get some help, but say one thing about Dolan, he does care about his teams like George did. Just because it hasn't worked out and he's a dumbass doesn't make that any less true.
As for the original question, I'm not going to pretend I know what it's like in a world that involves billions of dollars, but everyone has a price and I'm sure if that price were met they'd sell. However owning the Yankees is a pretty neat thing to have in your pocket. So unless they fall on bad times and need the money I say they stick with one of the best things in the world of sports to own.NYYFans Fantasy Baseball
