New York Yankees 2012-2013 Offseason Outlook
Assuming the role of Cashman and the rest of the FO, what moves do you make:
I realize there is basically a thread for each one of these, i figured it might be a little easier to condense it into one thread.
Do you fire Girardi, Long, Cashman?
Do you re-sign Swisher?
Is Arod gone somehow?
Pickup Grandersons option?
Re-sign Ichiro?
What trades and free agent signing within reason do you look into?

Re: New York Yankees 2012-2013 Offseason Outlook
To answer your questions in order:
1. I keep Girardi & Cashman. I don't think hitting coaches make that much of a difference, so I equivocate on Kevin Long.
2. No (see #4)
3. I really think it depends on what kind of salary relief we get in the deal. ARod has 5 years & at least $120M left on his deal (he will absolutely make the 660 HR bonus and may very well make the 714 HR bonus).
4. Yes, I would sign Ichiro on a one-year deal to play RF next year, giving our minor league OFers another year to develop.
5. I let Granderson go without picking up his option. We would need a 3Bman if ARod leaves and a LFer to replace Granderson (Gardiner goes to CF). I would re-sign Ibanez and Chavez for bench/DH duties.Forgive me for taking the Contrarian view

Re: New York Yankees 2012-2013 Offseason Outlook
Let's let Granderson and Swisher walk.
Re-sign Ichiro, Ibanez, Martin, Andy, and Kuroda.
Trade Arod+Cash for whatever to Miami.
Sign Delmon Young
Acquire any solid 3B or let Nunez play 3B full time.

Re: New York Yankees 2012-2013 Offseason Outlook
One move for Brian Cashman and the Yankee brass to avoid: sign Josh Hamilton.
Another move they should make: get another lefty reliever to add in the bullpen (unless Pedro Feliciano is really healthy). I don't want to see Boone Logan doing everything alone again. It's not the 27 World Championships that drive the New York Yankees. It's the 28th.
Every year is The Year. Go Yankees.

1. No to Joe. Cashman yes. but won't happen.
2. No
3. Yes
4. Yes. Then trade him
5. Not sure.
6. FA market is kind of dry. No to Hamilton.
Trade, Granderson & Arod. Perhaps you can package Granderson with Hughes? and get a solid 3rd baseman back. Although I would like to see David Adams get a shot.
Continue to fast track Tyler Austin. I think we see him mid-late next season.

Re: New York Yankees 2012-2013 Offseason Outlook
Agree. No to Young. While we're at it ... no to Hamilton. Let Swisher walk. Granderson? Tough to replace 40+ HRs and passable defense. Yeah, he's another Adam Dunn only smaller. Unload A-Rod if the Marlins will bite no matter how much it costs. Any chance of them being dumb enough to ship Reyes? Re-sign Ichiro (for an appropriate amount for a non-power hitting OF of his age).

Re: New York Yankees 2012-2013 Offseason Outlook
I'm Nick Swisher's biggest fan but I think given his whole public outcry of the booing, the Yankees desire to get under 189M and his poor postseason performance I see it very much unlikely he'll be in pinstripes next year. I'd love to have him back but right now I cant see it.
My steps should that happen:
1. Fire K-Long. It's his job to make sure the team hits and we haven't all year especially with RISP
2. Find a RF replacement. Obvious choice would be Ichiro but I wouldnt count out a trade for Clevelands Shin Shoo Choo. He shouldn't cost much in trade since he will be a FA in 2014
3. Re-sign Martin, Kuroda, Pettitte pick up Granderson, Cano options if they want to stay
4. Find bullpen longman
5. Deal with arb raises
6. Bench filler spots
7. Get ready for Spring TrainingThe real reason why the Yankees keep winning is cause the other team can't stop staring at the damn pinstripes

Kenny *Bleepin* Powers.
I personally pray that Pineda is ok.
Would love to trade A-Rod. Trade Granderson. Let Swisher walk.
Yes it is hard to replace 3/5 of the lineup, but I would love to work a package to get Mike Olt from Texas.
Would not be surprised to see the team trade Hughes.

Re: New York Yankees 2012-2013 Offseason Outlook
I hope the Yankees take a look at BJ Upton. He's only 28, is a good defender, and gives the team some right handed power which they are missing. He's probably looking at about the same contract as Swisher would get and I think he's a better bet over the next 5 years.
Definitely pick up Granderson's contract even if it's just to trade him. It's a waste to let him walk. This guy was an MVP candidate last year; there is definitely interest in him on a 1/13 deal. If they sign Upton and keep granderson then they could move granderson to right and have the fastest outfield in the majors. It wouldn't be ideal due to his arm, but his speed should make it a wash.
Chris Young and Shin Soo Choo are supposed to be available as well and might be good options.

Re: New York Yankees 2012-2013 Offseason Outlook
Why is Upton a bad idea? Fangraphs has him at 11.5 WAR over the past 3 years. He's 28, durable, and good defensively. It's hard to get all that in free agency without a huge commitment. Maybe I'm estimating his contract wrong, but it seems like he's being valued the same as Swisher.

Re: New York Yankees 2012-2013 Offseason Outlook
Nick Swisher has played better defense, offense and been just as durable as BJ Upton, with 11.8WAR in past three years.
So yeah, the comparison is pretty fair.
BJ Upton will take multiyears (I am guessing 60~75/4~5) and a pick (Rays will probably make him qualifying offer to get a compensating pick). I wouldn't be surprised if he gets more but the market is pretty set with what Adam Jones and Andrew McCutchen got last year.
We have a 10.5m (1 million buyout) option on Swisher for next year. I'll keep Swisher's 10.5 and pass on BJ Upton's contract and the pick.

I'm pretty sure the option was for 2012 and Swish is a straight FA this offseason. I'll check, though.

Re: New York Yankees 2012-2013 Offseason Outlook
We're slowly turning into the Red Sux

I'm looking for us to add a big bat, some defense and relief pitching
I'm all for an Outfield consisting of Hamilton/Granderson/Upton- unlikely but formidable
I really hope A-Rod is done when the Season is over to be honest though
And maybe add another young arm via tradeNot Removing Until We Acquire Giancarlo Stanton
