Baltimore wants as many chances as they can to get in the ALDS. If they win and the Yankees lose, that gives them the AL East playoff, and if they lose that, the Wild Card playoff. So two chances to win one game. They wouldn't want to sacrifice the division playoff because winning the WC game isn't a given.

It would have been great had Yankees, O's, A's and Texas all had the same record and one game playoff would have been played on Thursday between Yanks and O's and Texas and A's. That would have been crazy.........
