Says the guy who wanted to hire someone with zero head coaching experience...on any level. Why are you still here?

Not a big fan of this hire.

AV is a much better option than Messier or Ruff but he has a lot of the same faults that Torts had as a coach (sitting on leads, puckering when ever things get a little tough, etc.)

At the very least, his teams have been much better on the PP than the Rangers have (other than last year, where Vancouver was actually worse.) If he can hire some top assistants to join the staff, this hire will look a lot better.

See, I wasn't a fan of TOTAL change. Some one that comes in with no defense and all offense. I like the fact that he has some Tortorella in him. Tortorella was not a bad coach.

He sounds like Tortorella with a plan on offfense. Which I like.

Tortorella was fired because of his attitude and unwillingness to open things up and fix the PP.

A lot Vigneault/Tortorella faults can be said for most coaches.

I'm glad they went with a defensive guy as well but I still think AV is closer to Torts than most people want to admit.

Yes, D men get much more involved in the rush and they're more aggressive overall and break outs will improve exponentially after a bit but when this get tough there is going to be a ton of blind clears and dump and coast going on (which I hated.) Things in the playoffs are never going to be easy and granted, Vancouver lost to the eventual cup winner in 3 of the last 4 years, but I haven't liked how they've looked in any of the series that they lost (with the exception of the 10 series against Chicago, that was on Luongo.)

I think the best thing I can say about this move is that I'm relieved that Mark Messier wasn't hired.

Statistical evaluation of Torts vs Vigneault.

With Alain Vigneault on board, the Rangers are likely going to be changing their styles of play. But with that style change comes understanding what that change will bring. This is something we’ve covered a few times here, but it’s worth digging deeper into the puck possession metrics to see how exactly the Rangers will be differing in styles of play, and how effective AV’s more conservative style is at driving puck possession.

Make no mistake, there are very few coaches as aggressive as John Tortorella. The Rangers sat at the top of the league in GF% (goals for percentage, GF/[GF+GA]), CF%, and SF% this past season, which was likely the most efficient on-ice performance of any Torts-coached Ranger team. They may not have been pretty, they may have been maddeningly inconsistent, but they were efficient in puck possession as a team. Vigneault’s Canucks, however, were not in the top-10 in these categories this past season.

But it is unfair to really rate Vigneault –or Tortorella for that matter– with just one lockout-shortened season of stats.

Maybe he can do something with our pathetic PP.

Vancouver was only 22nd in the league this year, but they had a lot of injuries. The past two years they were in the top 12.

^ Top 10 the previous three seasons along with a #1 finish in 10-11.

This team doesn't have the horses to finish in the top 10. Get a good right handed shot (or two) and that may change.

They should be able to crack league average with the talent they have. If they managed to be just at league average this year they would have been so much more dangerous.

^ Right. Just a decent PP with structure would be nice. Not bottom of the barrel and players doing what they want. That's why I think the whole 'shot from the point' that Tortorella was making excuse for having a bad PP, was/is overrated. You don't need that to have a middle of the road PP. imo. Yes, with Hank and an already good team defense, an average PP would take this team far.

Now of course if you want something lethal, you need certain personnel.

    Yes, you certainly do.

With out a threat from the point it severely limits a team's options and makes the PP that much easier to defend.

Now does that excuse the fact that this team was rarely able to maintain zone time while on the PP? No, and that is something coaching can take care of but if you're expecting this team to hop into the 13-16 range strictly based on coaching then you're going to be in for a big surprise unless some changes are made.
