Your biggest culinary surprise...
Mine was onion rings. I was around 8 years old and in Italia. Ate a ton of them. Then found out they were calamari (this was when no American even knew what calamari was..err....were). Had a split second "ewwwww" moment, then figured what the hell. Loved them ever since.

Pumpkin pie. For years and years I wouldn't eat it (the idea of pumpkin as a filler for a pie didn't sound all that appetizing to me). One day I gave in and tried it and said, "you know, this isn't half bad". It's no apple pie but I was pleasantly surprised.

Re: Your biggest culinary surprise...
That's so funny!
This would be mine also.
I didn't try pumpkin pie til I was probably in my 30's.... as a child it just wasn't something I even wanted to consider, and then somewhere in my 30's, I decided to try a small piece and I was shocked that I liked it. It may still not be my first choice of dessert if a home made apple pie or pecan pie is there, but often if I "go back" for another sweet later on that night, it may very well be a small piece of pumpkin pie..Of all the things in life I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

I'm not a pie person but I love pumpkin pie. Its literally in my top five reasons of why I like Thanksgiving.

Carrot Cake... A dessert made out of a vegetable sounds gross but it's really good. Only tried it a few years ago for the first time
