Messersmith? LOL!!!!!!!!!!! Yanks were the only team to take a chance on him back then due to his injury history at that point. Certanly didn't steal him from anyone. He was actually pitching very well in ST that year when he fell an landed on his pitching shoulder covering first base on a ground ball and got hurt again. Did come back but hurt his shoulder again and that pretty much finished him.

Well, he's missing the $30 mil/year contract to back up those stats
Attention Steinbrenner and front-office morons! Your triumphs mean nothing. You all stink. You can sit on it, and rotate! This is George Costanza. I fear no reprisal. Extension 5-1-7-0.

Will the Yankees shell out the $400 million or whatever to get him in the Bronx?
That rules how he is only a fan of frontrunning teams with national fanbases...I like his style lol

The point is that the Yankees were always there with a checkbook to snatch any star player that George wanted. It was bad for the game and taking Harper today would be equally bad for the game. Develop our own and do it legitamitedly.

I have to agree. As much as I enjoyed being at the games this weekend, the fans in DC know they are seeing someone with incredible potential, as they do with Strasburg. This is a fun team to watch. The entire area surrounding the stadium is in the beginning stages of becoming something similar to Camden Yards, with the waterfront, restaurants, luxury condos and hotels. Development was already scheduled but now, there is a sense of urgency to get it done.

There were two jersey numbers you saw this weekend more than any others - 34 and 2.

I understand the 2, but why were so many people wearing A. J. Burnett jerseys?

A good friend of mine is 100% convinced Harper will be a Yankee when he hits FA. He presents a compelling argument.

Did you plan on presenting it or keeping us in the dark? I would love to hear about your good friend's reasons for Washington to let their franchise player come here for any reason.

I think the only way he does is because he wants to shine on the biggest stage.

I'm going to wait until he reaches the 100 games played plateau before I decide if I want him 6 years from now, 45 games isn't nearly enough to judge.

Re: Will Bryce Harper be a Yankee?

It probably isn't a matter of the Yankees 'wanting' him. Even if he 'wants' to come here and leave what could be a great situation with Washington, you still have to wonder if they're going to pay him as much as anyone to be their generational cornerstone, wouldn't Boras (who has had a bad relationship with the Yanks to date and a GREAT relationship with Washington owner Ted Lerner and GM Mike Rizzo) strongly advise him to stay in Washington?

I think Washington is the favorite to keep him, with no one a real close second. If he leaves Washington, it would probably be for the Bronx. But it's 55% odds or better that he stays there after his arbitration years are up in 2018, with us making up the split 45% field and owning maybe 30% of it? Make sense? Am I wrong in this thinking--and please don't use wishful thinking here.

Harper likely stays in Washington his entire career.

It's actually 6.5 years away from now.

Also, I don't think it's a lock by any means. I think he's most likely to stay in Washington, maybe call it 60% or 50% at the least. With us being the second most likely destination and possibly the only other logical spot. Still think him signing LTC with Washington is the most likely and makes the most sense.

I think we should start a performance thread now just to be sure.
