1995 Playoffs Question
Why did the Yankees play the Mariners in the Division Series and not the Indians? The Indians had the best record in the league and using today's format would have played the Yankees. I don't remember how the playoffs worked backed then.

Re: 1995 Playoffs Question
They had a rotating system where two division winners got HFA, and played the third winner and the WC. Those two were the East and Central in 1995. Regular season records had nothing to do with the matchups. Since Boston won in the East, and the Yankees were in the same division, Boston had to play Seattle, leaving the Indians and the Yanks. This system was widely hated, and lasted only from '95 to '97. It would have gone in in '94, if there had been a '94.
"Deep to left! Yastrzemski will not get it! It's a home run! A three-run homer by Bucky Dent! And the Yankees now lead by a score of 3-2!" - New York Yankees announcer Bill White (October 2, 1978)
