Spanish Cup: 2012-13 Copa del Rey
Final from Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid, Spain
From Marca.com and ESPN FC
There won't be a single trophy won for Real Madrid in 2013.
Atletico Madrid won their 10th Copa del Rey title after outlasting their big Madrid brother inside the Santiago Bernabeu 2-1 after extra time.
Cristiano Ronaldo made the headlines for both the right and wrong reasons in this match.
The former Manchester United star winger gave Real Madrid a 1-0 lead 14 minutes in when he leaped over Diego Godin and headed in Mesut Ozil's corner. That was Ronaldo's seventh goal in the Spanish Cup tournament.
However, Atleti scored the equalizer in the 35th minute Radamel Falcao undressed Raul Albiol and threaded a diagonal pass at the half-way line to Diego Costa who rifled his shot past Diego Lopez. That was Costa's eighth of the tournament.
Jose Mourinho's men had chance after chance, but every opportunity went begging.
Mourinho was infuriated at referee Carlos Gomez when he gave tons of fouls in Atleti's favor.
Mourinho was sent to the stands by Gomez with 15 minutes to go for dissent.
The match went into extra time tied at 1.
Nine minutes into the first-half of extra time, Atleti drew first blood when Koke whipped in a low cross and Miranda headed in the tally.
It got even worse for the Madristas when Ronaldo saw dead red from Gomez after his challenge on Gabi when he bicycle-kicked him in the nose in the 114th minute for his second yellow of the game. However, Gabi looked like he sold it.
Things got even uglier with a scuffle involving Atleti manager Diego Simone and Real Madrid defender Pepe along the touchline.
Even Atleti goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was hit in the head with something behind his own net.
Atleti had Gabi sent off in stoppage time in the second half of extra time with a second booking, but Real Madrid failed to score the equalizer as Atleti wins the 2013 Copa del Rey tournament.
