- The eternal state of optimism that the Yankees will win it all
Re: Choose one: Josh Hamilton or Cole Hamels
Unfortunately, I can't vote neither, so I am not voting.
Personally, I want to see the Yankees give their youngsters a chance rather than signing free agents. This team desperately needs to replace the core four with another core - we have Robby Cano to start and I would even be willing to put Brett Gardner into the possible mix, but we need more youth to sustain us for the next decade.Forgive me for taking the Contrarian view

Re: Choose one: Josh Hamilton or Cole Hamels
the Core Four + Bernie isn't something you can reasonably expect to replicate.
to be honest, it's not like it's a sure thing there will be quality enough, major league ready "youngsters" to give a chance to to even try to go that route, in filling the specific holes they have/will have.

Hamilton is made out of glass. I don't see how this is a question

Re: Choose one: Josh Hamilton or Cole Hamels
Yes. To me the relapse is his business. He didn't do heroine, he drank. One night of drinking in the last 5 years is not "off the field problems". Yes, he had "off the field problems" 5-6 years ago when he was a coke/cake fiend.
I'm not minimizing or misunderstanding addiction. I'm an alcoholic 6 months sober and have seen heroine absolutely destroy better men than me. I think many equate Josh Hamilton getting sloppy at a bar once or twice in 5 years with Josh Hamilton doing dope. It's just not the same thing.
I've also lost 5 peers/friends to motorcycle accidents before my 29th birthday, so yes, I stand by that statement as well.

Re: Choose one: Josh Hamilton or Cole Hamels
He'll certainly decline, but I think it will be later than you think. Regardless, for 2 years (at least) he'll greatly improve the team.
Hamels isn't a lock to pitch well in the AL. His career interleague ERA is 4.21 and that's with pitchers batting in approximately half of those games.
Edit: Hamels has 7 of 19 interleague GS in AL parks.

The Hamels/Harper thing was dumb but so blown out of proportion. People act like its the first time in history someone was beaned without provocation.

Re: Choose one: Josh Hamilton or Cole Hamels
Well if Hamilton could hit 8 HR's every week....he'd be my choice....as much as I'd love to see Hamilton in a Yankee uniform...due to injury concerns and beliefs in pitching...the money would be better spent on Hamels.

Re: Choose one: Josh Hamilton or Cole Hamels
Why has the debate turned into which addiction he relapsed with? There is a chance he has issues with either.
But again, this is not how we should be evaluating this question. They are both nearly elite at their positions. Which one would the Yankees benefit more from? I say pitching.NYYFans Fantasy Baseball

Re: Choose one: Josh Hamilton or Cole Hamels
If Hamilton was about 3 years younger I would've chosen him, but its Cole Hamels.
"It is the soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protestor to burn the flag."

And we'd be paying him for 6-8 years. If it was a 2 or 3 year deal, I'd be on board
1. Talk about SSS. It's 117 innings across his career.Hamels isn't a lock to pitch well in the AL. His career interleague ERA is 4.21 and that's with pitchers batting in approximately half of those games.
Edit: Hamels has 7 of 19 interleague GS in AL parks.
Since it's only 117 IP across his career, his rookie year and year after are a big part of those numbers.
His ERA is inflated because of his numbers in his rookie year and the year after. He's been fine in inter-league after that, especially since he's been facing a lot of of the AL East (about 70 of 117 IP)
2006: 8.04 ERA
2007: 5.54 ERA
2008: 3.86 ERA
2009: 3.65ERA
2010: 3.60ERA
2011: 1.96ERA
I'm not concerned about him making the NL/AL transition.A fool and his money can throw one heck of a party!
