Parachutes are great things to get you out of an aircraft that's on fire or otherwise about to lose structural integrity. But, if the airplane you're in is going to land, I'm a firm believer that you should land with it.

I remember an interview with Jackie Martling in the Post...they asked him his favorite jokes, and he said it would be easier to give the punchlines. Of the 10 punchlines, I think I knew 8 of the jokes...I don't remember if that was one of them...I know "OK, OK, I'll do the dishes" was, though...as well as "10 dollars, same as in town".

As a career military pilot, I spent thousands of hours sitting on an ejection seat, strapped into a (folded and packed) parachute. I made it a career goal for the number of landings to be equal to the number of takeoffs, meaning never pulling the trigger and using that parachute. I'm proud to state that I achieved this goal.

Sadly, no. I miss it. When I retired from the Air Force, it wasn't a particularly good time to get hired by the airlines, so I opted for honest work instead.

I never got a private pilot's license, as Mrs Maynerd won't set foot into a small airplane.

Went skydiving a couple years ago and I loved it. Was totally scared/nervous on the way up... once I jumped though all those feelings were gone. It was great. And I got a nice souvenir video of the whole thing.

I'm not afraid of heights, but I'm scared s***less of falling. So, no. I worked construction as a carpenter summers in college and had to walk along joists that were only nailed at the end or hang from my hammer by one arm as I swung from one side of the roof to the other. Crazy stuff that only macho peer pressure could make me do. Dang, I hated roofs. Jump out of a plane for fun? No way!

My sister and I took our father for his 50th birthday. One of the top 10 experiences of my life.

He's expecting a 2nd tour for his 60th...to be honest not sure if I'd have the nerve to do it again. Guess I'll find out in about a year...

I don't really go by odds in this case. Of course you have a better chance at getting into an accident. There are thousands of cars on the road no matter where you go. When you jump, where is the next person jumping? It's not about having an accident, it's about what could happen when something goes wrong and like you said a lifetime of pain and probably a wheelchair on top of it. I'm not scared of death, I'm only scared of it hurting. If I have an accident in a car chances are I walk away from it.

Went skydiving, it was a blast. I highly recommend it, although you do sign your life away, dont let it scare you
