Re: Bryce Harper called up
Another homer for Harper tonight.
I don't think they should sign Harper to a Longoria style team friendly deal, they should sign Harper to a player friendly deal and do everything it takes to keep him.

Re: Bryce Harper called up
Yes. He appears to be the best 19 year old in the history of baseball, and seems to be the first truly great positional talent since Alex Rodriguez. I'm not counting Pujols only because he doesn't have every single tool in large supply the way that ARod or Griffey before him did.

[i]'He was asked after the game if — because it’s legal for 19 year-olds to drink in Canada — he was going to go get a celebratory beer. His response: ”That’s a clown question, bro.”

Re: Bryce Harper called up
When you hear all the hype about players who just don't live up to it, after awhile, it gets old. Not so here. He is flat out spectacular and for such a young kid, he plays old school. He uses a 35 ounce bat and swings it like a toothpick, but he's never out of control.
I loved that he got on manager Davey Johnson for moving him around the outfield during a game. He told him he wasn't finished making friends - he will talk to anybody out there.

What was insane is how far it went (hitting the "C" in BLACKBERRY) and the OF thinking he had a chance to catch it...

Re: Bryce Harper called up
Just to put it in perspective, Mike Trout who is also having a great season this year so far at age 20.....
Last year Trout in the same number of games as Harper has so far this year(40) put up pretty bad numbers.
Trout at age 19
.220/.281/.390 in 40 games 135 AB's

5 Ks and making the final out as the winning run? That's a clown game, bro.

Seems like he's still learning how to handle off speed pitches.

Re: Bryce Harper called up
Seriously - I was at the games and a little nervous about the Yankees getting their pinstripes (or road grays in this case) handed to them the way the Nats have been playing. Pettitte is probably the first pitcher I've seen who made Harper finally look like a rookie. It looked like he got him out with the same pitch every time.
I must say that the Nats fans sitting in my area appreciated a great play/performance by a player on the opposing team. After the Yankees won Friday, the couple next to me said congratulations. Saturday and Sunday some applauded Pettitte and Nova. I applauded when Harper made a great diving catch on Friday. I realize that all gloves are off from now on.

Re: Bryce Harper called up
Sounds like you had a nice experience at the games Doris.
I did notice there were a ton of yankee fans there but the yankees do travel well (fan-wise) especially with interleague where they dont' play often...Nova got a really great hand and I was wondering if any of that was from Nats fans just appreciating a good pitching performance...nice to know that was the case.

Re: Bryce Harper called up
Agreed. I was at the Saturday game and the atmosphere was "cordially electric", if that makes any sense. Fans were really into the game but there was no real sense of animosity on the part of Nationals fans (aside from booing the "Let's go Yankees" chant, which is understandable). I think they appreciate us taking care of the Mets for them, and likewise, we appreciate them sweeping Boston in Fenway

Bryce Harper's legal team has applied to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in order to gain ownership of "That's a clown question, bro." The saying, of course, has become a phenomenon ever since the Washington Nationals rookie responded to a Toronto reporter in a Q&A session who was asking if the 19-year-old would be interested in a postgame beer while his team played in Canada. The Washington Post's D.C. Sports Bog has the details:
According to Comcast SportsNet, Harper revealed on Thursday that Under Armour, with whom he has an endorsement deal, will be selling t-shirts with the phrase that is clearly destined to live on forever.

Re: Bryce Harper called up
He's amazing - like watching Mickey Mantle at times. In at least 3 games, I've seen him turn a single into a double by just taking advantage of the outfielder's indifference or position of his body when he caught up to the ball. His teammates deserve some of the credit for his success too. Rookies typically speak only when spoken too and walk on eggshells. The Nats have let Harper be himself, as the Yankees did with Joba, who would trash talk to anybody.
