Re: R.I.P. Bill "Moose" Skowron
He was a great old Yankee who I really enjoyed watching play back in the 1950's. He hated to be traded in 1963 and ended up playing against the Yankees in the WS for the Dodgers. The Yanks were swept in four games and Moose was one of the players for them who hurt NY.

Re: R.I.P. Bill "Moose" Skowron
Casual fans wrongly believed Skowron was called Moose because of his size and physique. He had been a running back at Purdue University, and though he was strong with wide shoulders, he was not particularly big. His nickname was, instead, linked to his appearance as a youngster. After a haircut, his grandfather decided he resembled Italian prime minister Benito Mussolini; hence the nickname that stayed with Skowron for the rest of his life.
Love hearing the players tell those funny stories from the past. Another Yankee great diasppears into the Iowa cornfield. RIP.September 28, 2008 - the day the HOF got a wake-up Moose call.
