    2012 Freddy Garcia performance thread.

That was painful to watch last night.

It's not like I was expecting the guy to pitch a shutout, but you expect him to at least keep you in the game (which, strangely enough, he actually did). Five wild pitches? That's just not Garcia. He didn't even give up many hits either, which I suppose is a sliver lining. It's not that he was getting rocked, he just couldn't throw strikes at all.

No question, he is the 5th starter, he couldnt grip the ball.

That's the worst I've ever seen him pitch. It was hard. However, having throw 35 pitches in the first inning, he still managed to get another three plus innings without imploding and putting the team in a huge hole. He'll improve, give us decent and above average production for a guy who is probably behind two other starters who are currently not in our rotation at present. He is what he is and we were all happy when we re-signed him during the offseason.

I was wondering about that - gripping the ball. Temps were probably in mid-40's last night.

i wasn't an advocate actually. I expect meaningful regression from last year and he is always an injury risk. Pulling for the guy, but even before the other changes to the rotation I thought Cashman should have tapped out after one incredibly valuable season.

Fair enough, I also expected regression from him but felt the signing was worth it because it's only a one year deal.

With how bad is command was last night, that could have been a lot worse.

His five WPs last night was more than he had all of last year. It was just a crazy off night. I'm not worried. I still like him as a #5.

Well - he certainly cannot keep tossing away 5 WPs a night and expect to stay in the rotation

Watching Freddy battle last night and never give in kind of reminded me of El Duque, but with worse stuff. I'm hoping the cold weather was what bothered him and he'll improve in his next start. If he can't he won't be in the rotation for long.

I love him as a #6 with the ability to spot start and eat middle relief innings, but he's overpriced for that. I'm pulling for him, but honestly they'll have better options for the back of the rotation soon. Pitchers with a bit more immediate and a lot more intermediate upside than Garcia.

Me too unless he has totally lost it or gets hurt there should be no reason why he cant be a decent #5 SP.

5 WP, are we sure we sent Burnett to Pittsburgh?

    • Freddy Garcia became the first pitcher since 1989 to throw five wild pitches in a game. He threw four wild pitches all of last year. The biggest problem, he said, was his splitfinger. That’s usually Garcia’s best pitch, but tonight he couldn’t get a good grip on the ball. “Tried to throw better pitches but I wasn’t able to do that,” he said.
    • Oddly enough, the last time a Major League pitcher threw five wild pitches in a game was April 5, 1989. On that night, Ken Howell threw five wild pitches for the Phillies against the Cubs. That happened to be Joe Girardi’s second big league game as a player. He had two hits in the game. “At least I wasn’t catching (for the Phillies) so they couldn’t blame me,” Girardi said.

Still early, but hes making Girardis decision very easy when Pettitte or Pineda are ready to go.

Don't jump all over me but how was the Umpiring last night? Was he giving Carl critical pitches or did it even out? I missed most of the game, do to NY Ranger playoffs.. Still I was checking in with the box score, and the forum..

I came back to say that the Yankees can't afford to lose too many of these type games, and that we need to keep a close eye on mr Garcia, Yanks have this habit of feeling sorry for certain pitchers. Oh by the way I see that Wade got shelled, that's putting out the fire!

Pavano was getting the low outside corner, but that's what a soft tossing vet is suppose to do. Expand the zone as the game moves on...something Freddy couldn't do.

Re: 2012 Freddy Garcia performance thread.

It's amazing how much venom there is after two lousy starts for a guy who pitched very well for the team last season. I don't expect him to repeat and I'm sure he'll be out of the rotation once Pineda and Pettitte are back, but it seems like people are jumping down the guy's throat awfully quickly.
