Re: 2012 Rafael Soriano Performance Thread
That's part of it. Buit I think it depends more on the market, if there is a team willing to throw 4 years his way he's gone. If not the Yanks would probably give him the most money on a 2 or 3 year deal. Not sure if that is wise on the part of the Yanks or not but it is probably true.
As I've said, I'd prefer they don't allocate that kind of coin to a closer if they are serious about the $189M payroll for 2014 as I think the money could be better spent elswhere in the future. If they are operating on an unlimited budget (which they are not) by all means bid him up.Baseball is life;

Re: 2012 Rafael Soriano Performance Thread
But he still wants a multi year deal, which will get him more money overall.

Re: 2012 Rafael Soriano Performance Thread
He did a very good job for the Yankees but, unless he makes the unlikely decision to come back for only one year, the Yankees should let him go. If they're serious about $189M, then avoiding a $15M payout to a closer is a key part of that equation.

Boras seems to be taking a swipe at the organization here - saying that if Soriano walks and they have to resort to "second best" to replacee him, then that implies that the FO no longer has winning as priority 1. Thoughts on that?[snip]
As expected, Soriano, 32, opted out of his contract Wednesday, and will seek more compensation in free agency. Scott Boras, Soriano’s agent, has made it clear that Soriano deserves a lucrative long-term deal. “I’m not surprised Sori did this,” the Yankees’ president, Randy Levine, said. “Scott Boras told the player that he could get a four-year deal for $60 million, so I would understand why he would opt out. ”
Boras denied that he made promises to Soriano, but he did note that it was an obvious decision to opt out. He said he would continue to negotiate with the Yankees, and was not overly concerned about the Yankees desire to limit payroll by 2014.
“The Yankees have always been about getting the best players and having great depth,” he said. “The initial decision to sign Soriano is one of the main reasons they won the A.L. East in 2012 and decisions like that are what made the Yankees a goliath. Once they stop making decisions like that, the Yankee brand changes.”
The Yankees are expected to make a qualifying offer to Soriano for the predetermined amount of $13.3 million by Friday at 5 p.m. Soriano automatically gets $1.5 million for opting out of his contract (instead of a $14 million salary for 2013). If he accepts the offer, he will make $14.8 million in 2013.
If he rejects the offer and seeks free agency, the Yankees will get a first-round draft pick from the team that signs him (unless it is a top-10 pick and then they would get the team’s next pick).
The Yankees are also waiting to find out what Rivera will do. They expect Rivera, who will be 43 next year, to return, but Rivera told General Manager Brian Cashman he was not certain.September 28, 2008 - the day the HOF got a wake-up Moose call.

I know Boras is a smart guy, but Robertson is the better pitcher.

not sure if GMs do it. if they do, all the more reason to not play the game for soriano as you'll be bidding against erroneously high bids.

Re: 2012 Rafael Soriano Performance Thread
Plausible Yanks would rather try Aardsma or Robertson or Phelps or some combination or others if Soriano won't sign a fiscally sensilbe contract. A 4 year deal for a closer is not going to happen. Boras is going to be begging Hank and Hal to get the option back. Perhaps the newly-flush Dodgers write a big check, but nor for 4 years.
