Re: 2012 Rafael Soriano Performance Thread
Thoroughly impressive performance by Soriano tonight. Restored order to an out of control game.

Re: 2012 Rafael Soriano Performance Thread
He can have a good season and still be overpaid and we were talking about a scenario where he opts out and asks for even more money. I like having him on the team but Soriano is a luxury item. I won't worry about it all as long as the budget doesn't get in the way of a bigger need for the team.

Re: 2012 Rafael Soriano Performance Thread
Why wouldn't he? Judging by Papelbon's contract, Soriano's options after the year are 12.5/1 (he gets 1.5 buyout if he opts out) with the Yankees or something like 30~40/3~4 in FA, provided he continues to be an effective closer for us.
Given Mo's health/age and DRob's struggles as a closer, I actually am hoping Soriano stays put.
But here is the rub... if he's worth 12.5, he will opt out and try to get more, in years and/or AAV, getting a nice freebie 1.5million check in the process. If he's not worth 12.5, he stays put and milks us. This is why the contract was horrendous. We couldn't win. Best we could do was a draw.

Re: 2012 Rafael Soriano Performance Thread
No question he's going to opt out. He's proving to be an outstanding closer, and he won't accept coming back as a seventh inning or set up guy to Mo, even for 1 season..and some team in need of a shut down guy will show him the money.

I really really hope that he opts out to close somewhere else now. That freed up $$$ could prove very useful.

Mariano Soriano
If they ask who was our star, give them twenty five names, and if you forget our names, just tell them we were Yankees.
