Again, the problem with that logic is you have a second game tonight with a starting pitcher who normally goes somewhere between 4 and 6 innings.

You know going in that at best you'll have to fill 3 innings.

And he has another game tomorrow. In fact, no more off-days the rest of the year.

I just don't see any reason to, #1, put Rapada in to begin the 6th inning with a 3-0 lead and #2 to take Derek Lowe out unless you absolutely have to.

They could have gone into tonight with a fresh Rapada, fresh Logan, fresh Robertson, fresh Chamberlain, and maybe even a fresh Soriano.

Now he has an overworked Soriano and Robertson and the other guys also pitched today.

Who knows, maybe his plan is to go Phelps-Garcia-Wade-Thomas-Eppley.

I could argue that bring in Lowe and his 5+ ERA was a mistake that worked out ok but I wont.

Who knows maybe the plan is to shell Rickey Romero tonight and use the scrubs to protect a big lead instead of having them try to protect a close one.

A win in the day game is better than a fresh pen and gettig swept because you allowed Lowe to meltdown in his 2nd inning of work and Phelps couldn't get out of the 2nd in the night cap, hypothetically of course.

The fact that I didn't want Lowe in the game, and then I didn't want to take him out, allows me to realize maybe I shouldn't be too hard on Girardi.

The underlying problem is that we have a long-man role on the team, with two guys (Garcia and Lowe) who can fill it, and Girardi has no faith in either one. In the playoffs, with Phelps and/or Nova and/or Hughes in that role, I certainly hope we see different in-game tactics.

Well I said it in the Joe G thread, D-rob & Soriano are probably not available tonight because of 20+ P count but I can in no way fault him for closing out a winnable game with his 2 best relievers, even if one of them melted down. The other 4 pitchers used all of 21 pitches with only Lowe throwing more than 5, I think they might just be avialable.

And Andy was on a 70 P count supposedly. He was pulled after 75, there was no way he was going out to warm up and pitch the 6th, even to one batter.

There is just no pleasing some. Seriously, Joe usually get's skewered on this site for bringing Lowe into a game that they are down by 2 and Lowe lets it get out of hand. Now he gets skewered for not trusting him with a 3 run lead for a 2nd inning?

Not to sound condesending here but have you ever pitched out the bullpen? If Joe is going "batter to batter" with Lowe as you suggest, he needs a reliver "hot" in the pen to be able to bring him in which is nearly as much effort to the reliver as him actually coming into the game to throw 6 pitches which is about what the relivers before and after Lowe did.

At this point in the season, I think the "not available" stuff goes out the window in the case of Soriano.

This decision just made no sense.

Maybe, but it was well within the bounds of being reportable. hellonewman and I aren't exactly thin-skinned, and both of us reacted pretty strongly to it. Maybe you can try holding yourself to a higher standard than "I've seen worse." Or not; it's up to you.

I agree with the statement, but I don't understand how he would do anything better than Nunez or Dickerson.

Quite frankly, this is moot b/c Girardi will bunt before he lets someone steal late in games.
