A very good job by the Yankees earning a split, after dropping the 1st two, against a solid team playing great baseball at home.

Toronto just lost 4 straight to the Rays. The Yankees should be able to beat them. And they really need to win since the next 4 games are against Texas.

Toronto looks like a dead team right now. They had a 2-5 west coast road trip followed by a sweep at the hands of the Rays. Their pitching is decimated with injuries and they are missing there biggest bat still in Bautista and I think Lawrie & Lind (who was rebounding from a dismal start) are also on the DL. If ever there was team ripe for kicking while they are down, it's the Blue Jays.

Garcia, Nova, Hughes - I'll be happy with 2 of 3. I agree with Mr. Coffee and others that these are not "must win games". But these are the types of series where good playoff teams generally stomp on fading also rans that can make the race to the playoffs more of a casual stroll.

Maybe I can temporarily alleve some stress:

The Yankees will make the playoffs.

Then, there's a good chance they lose in the first round due to starting pitching, the offense going cold, the ridiculous 3 out of 5 series, or just being out played. There's also a good chance they will win the first round.

After that, I like their chances.

I'm scared because teams like this tend to treat playing us as the difference between their families and children being spared or killed. Toronto is going to treat these 3 games like their last stand.
They'll play us to the death these 3 days and if we don't match that intensity we'll lose the series.

Seattle, a team, just like any other, capable of beating them. Worst case scenario. We lose our next six. TB wins their next six. We are down by half a game with a month an a half to play, still not eliminated or even out of it. The odds of the Yankees playing a "must win" game this regular season is extremely slim. Now are these next two games games we SHOULD win? Absolutely.

Pretty much the same teams but in a different order.

Point is, there's too many games left to really believe the Yankees series against the Jays is any more important than any other series.

Defensive play matters; I don't think anyone's ever questioned that. But that doesn't automatically make defensive statistics good measures of defensive value.
