Hey I was listening to the Joe Girardi show before the game on the radio and I heard them mention something about "umpire interference" being called yesterday? I missed yesterday's game. Anyone care to explain what happened? I don't know if I had ever seen or heard about that before. A-Rod tried to steal 3rd and got sent back?

Actually, he stole it during the NEXT at bat ... AFTER Jones had hit a fly ball on which he could have probably scored, had he been on third with one out. But he didn't get to third until there were two outs. And he didn't score.

I saw the replay on that-- I always thought that the umpire was considered 'part of the field' -- like if a batted ball glanced off the second base umpire it would still be live. I didn't know an umpire could cause interference.

I didn't either but when they posted the rule it looked like it only applied to that specific situation. That is catcher making a throw on steal or pick off attempt.

Techinally it's not an exeption. The rule is

INTERFERENCE

(a) Offensive interference is an act by the team at bat which interferes with, obstructs, impedes, hinders or confuses any fielder attempting to make a play. If the umpire declares the batter, batter- runner, or a runner out for interference, all other runners shall return to the last base that was in the judgment of the umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference, unless otherwise provided by these rules.
Rule 2.00 (Interference) Comment: In the event the batter-runner has not reached first base, all runners shall return to the base last occupied at the time of the pitch.
(b) Defensive interference is an act by a fielder which hinders or prevents a batter from hitting a pitch.
(c) Umpire’s interference occurs (1) When an umpire hinders, impedes or prevents a catcher’s throw attempting to prevent a stolen base, or (2) When a fair ball touches an umpire on fair territory before passing a fielder.
(d) Spectator interference occurs when a spectator reaches out of the stands, or goes on the playing field, and touches a live ball.

On any interference the ball is dead.

For all the umpire-bashing that goes on, I think he should get some credit for being right on the money on that call, without hesitation.

IIRC, it was the second. They won one other game without hitting a HR. I'll see if I can find the date.

Edited to Add: June 16th. The Yankees beat the Nationals 5-3 without hitting any HRs.
