True, but at least in football a boneheaded call can be rectified.

    Re: 2012 Umpire Performance/Venting Thread

I just watched the Replay of the game. They showed Girardi's post game interview about the Welke call.
Unfortunately, Joe is wrong on this one. Welke awarding the runner home is definitely a judgement call and that is not protestable.
What Joe should have argued that as soon as Welke called 'foul', the play is dead. That is not a judgement call and that is very protestable. Probably a protest the Yankees would have won.
Saying "foul' then changing the call to "fair" is much like saying, "strike, no, no wait - ball".
Not allowed. Welke killed the play with the foul call and that is a call that cannot be overturned.
If (hypothetically) the ball landed foul and is called fair, after the play is over, that particular call can be overturned and the runners reset.
But once an umpire says foul, there's no going back.

Of course, it's all moot because they won the game and would have dropped the protest anyway.

This attitude is precisely the reason you guys suck at sports and also why we keep having to bail you out of wars.

Not sure Americans should be discussing their war record following the last decade.

I judge a war this way: I ask myself 'if I could go back in time to just as the war started, with everything else remaining the same, which side would I want to be on'. Whichever side that is is the winner.

I'm pretty sure my way has the US undefeated.

Not the worst strike zone I've seen. Not the best either.

I dunno, seems like he was giving strikes just off the plate inside (I think that's inside), but the Yankees didn't really take advantage. All triangles there except for one square. Kinda the opposite on the other side of the plate.

Can someone post the normalized strike zone plot after today's game? I want to bask in the glow of the "human element".

Suprisingly the MASN feed didn't show a slow motion replay.

    exactly.

it was a hideously awful call, but 99% of the time a player dives that way, he's getting called out. a player is basically giving himself and an out up when he does what Tex did.
