Re: 2012 Umpire Performance/Venting Thread
This 7th inning was a horrible performance by the umps...clearly martin's called strike 3 was did not paint the corner. And Granderson held up on that check swing strike 3 in my opinion. I can see why martin would be extremely frustrated after seeing that pitch be called a ball all night long. Oh well what are ya gona do lets get a couple runs in the 8th!

Re: 2012 Umpire Performance/Venting Thread
We need a new CBA with the umpires... one with provisions for monitoring and enforcing standards.
Joe West is essentially unsupervised as the president of the umps' union.
There is absolutely no way MLB and MLBPA haven't complained about Joe West repeatedly. Just no way.

West is an embarrassment to the game. No other way to express it.

The one thing I just can never wrap my head around is not appealing to the 1B or 3B umpire for help on a check swing. It's the height of negligence to believe that YOU behind the plate actually have the best view on ANYTHING but an obvious swing. It will just never ever make sense to me.

Re: 2012 Umpire Performance/Venting Thread
For an umpire, I don't find that too bad. I count 8 calls that I don't find consistent, 3 for the Tigers and 5 for the Yankees and noone really terrible in my opinion. Overall no bias and consistent strike zone is really the only thing you can ask for if you have a human stand behind the plate calling it.
I don't like Joe West regardless of his performance yesterday and I still think a computerized strike zone would further remove bias and make things more consistent which is the most important thing to me.

^ Drake also made a nice call on a plate at the plate today. Stewart (I believe) slid in under the tag on a real close play. It looked like he was out in real time but the replay showed he got in under the tag.

Someone has to post the normalized strikezone chart for tonight's game. That was obscenely bad.

Re: 2012 Umpire Performance/Venting Thread
sheer perfection compared to Joe West, but the handful of outside called strikes was annoying and the 9th inning called strike on a rod, putting him down 0-2 -- the one where the catcher lunged violently to reach the pitch in the RH batter's box !! -- was brutal. From the chart it looked to be over a foot inside !! a rod: "how was that a strike" ??!!

Re: 2012 Umpire Performance/Venting Thread
The one that annoyed me was the pitch to Jeter. I think it was the 5th or 6th and Jeter was leading off. Count was 3-2 and the ball was clearly low (problably that little red square below the strike zone surrounded by all those green triangles) and he called it a strike. Yes, umpires make mistakes but that was a big miss. It might not have made a difference because of our horrific offense right now but a lead off walk versus a lead off strikeout is a big swing in fortunes.
I'm not crying about it or anything since the Yankees have much bigger problems. Just irked me a bit.2012 - The Year of the Big Boys
