Re: 2012 David Robertson Performance Thread

Up to 6 games ago, Robertson has always pitched with the knowledge that he had the single greatest safety net in sports history behind him should he encounter problems. It is naturally a different mindset knowing that now, he is the safety net and there is no one behind him. Not everyone is built for closing. We will now see what Robertson is made of when his next save opportunity arises.

We don't know a single thing about his mindset now, nor will we then.

I don't believe for a second that Robertson will struggle mentally with closing games. The guy is a fantastic reliever who has been sensational in dozens of huge, clutch situations. There is no tangible difference between that and what he's now being asked to do.

The Murray Chass piece on Mo's early struggles from 1997 is downright hilarious.

Re: 2012 David Robertson Performance Thread

As has already been mentioned, none of us know what's truly on Robertson's mind but he's certainly saying all the right things:
    http://web.yesnetwork.com/news/artic...9592&oid=36019
In a post-game interview, the 27-year-old fireballer said that he knew he wouldn’t be able avoid seeing highlights of his blown save on television, and also knew that there would be some backlash amongst Yankees fans as well.

But when he checked his Twitter account just after midnight, he apparently found much more positive reinforcement than he expected, leading to a trio of thankful Tweets from @DRob30:

“I expected to be slaughtered tonight on Twitter, but the support y'all have shown reminds me how amazing Yankee fans are,” reads the first.

That was followed up by an admission of a learning experience, as Robertson said that “Tonight sucked, but if there is one thing Mo has shown me it's how important it is to turn the page.”

Finally, Robertson was ready to close the book and look ahead.

“And look, it's already after midnight, which means it's a new day. Let's take this series tomorrow! #GoYanks,” read his final Tweet of the night.

Exactly. It was not hilarious at the time. It was probably what a lot of us felt. But now, knowing what we know about how that third year for Stanton and promoting Mo to closer both worked out (historically well), the article seems hilarious.

I'm not getting into the specifics of DRob's psychology. I am just saying that, common-sense wise, it would seem to me tougher mentally to pitch knowing one is not the last defense, versus the opposite. Like when one goes from student doctor to being the attending on the hospital floor. There is no one else to call. You are the doctor.

And before you respond: it's a meme that goes back to the ARod-clutch silliness. It's not meant to be taken seriously. In fact, it's my way of saying: we have no way of knowing anything about Robertson's psyche, and can infer nothing about it from last night. All we know is that he didn't pitch well last night.
Actually, D-Rob went to Alabama. Clearly he's a man.

I kind of figured that. Were he a woman, I'm sure that would have been discovered and mentioned somewhere along the way.

He might be headed to the DL which might be the prudent thing to do here. You don't want that type of injury to linger so you shut him down and hope you can heal him in a couple of weeks until June.

    Why wasn't he available today?

Because Girardi didn't want to use him two days in a row right now. You have to be careful with those obliques.

Ok. I was just wondering if there was any report of him feeling soreness today. I can understand Girardi being careful with him.
