2012 John Sterling Performance Thread
It's the top of the 2nd inning on Opening Day in Tampa, and Sterling has botched three significant play calls already. A-Rod just led off with a basehit, and he made it sound like an easy flyout.
His voice and his intonation is fine, but the guy cannot follow a baseball game smoothly anymore and he's been stumbling over his words when trying to call a play. It's infuriating to try and follow the games listening to him at times.Mo' Nut: One Smoove Brotha.

His tone in the first made me believe Granderson got a base it... not a double play.

Had to run to Home Depot-- turned on the game in the car:
"Nunez a hiiiigh chopper to short.. uh pitch.. and it gets past Pujols and rolls to the wall."
I had absolutely no clue what happened until he explained it afterward.27 World Championships

Re: 2012 John Sterling Performance Thread
So Sterling thought that a hit ball snagged by the pitcher was going to SS? I guess I can see that, but if the pitcher overthrew the throw, did it go to the RF foul wall, or the back wall in fair territory? I can't see a pitcher airmailing a ball and it goes to the back wall.

C'mon... c'mon... it's not that bad... I like to think of him as " Casey Stengel at the Mike" ....

He's still better than Suzyn who spent an inning the other night ranting on how you are possibly able to order a pizza online and get it delivered.

Re: 2012 John Sterling Performance Thread
His postgame Sunday night was rambling.
He couldn't remember if he had mentioned the turning point of the game... seemed to be looking around for a sheet of paper somewhere...
Not that many people were listening at 11:50 pm

Re: 2012 John Sterling Performance Thread
Can anyone point a finger on when he got so bad? I mean, in the mid 90's when he added Yankees Win, Theeee Yankees Win, it was good... Bern Baby Bern wasn't terrible... it's when he got beyond that that he got terrible... when was that? Early 2000's? What players did it start with?

Re: 2012 John Sterling Performance Thread
Last night during the post game show he started a sentence, then said something like "Oh, I dropped that, it's my fault...hold on a minute". Then there was dead silence for a good 5-6 seconds which is an eternity in radio. I could swear I heard papers shuffling, then he picked up talking about Jeter's HR. It was pretty awkward.
If they ask who was our star, give them 25 names, and if you forget our names, just tell them we were Yankees.

Re: 2012 John Sterling Performance Thread
Vin Scully he's not. Hopefully he announces his retirement this year. The first year of the new stadium, when they opened the gates 3 hours before game time, I saw him walking in. "HI JOHN!" I might as well been dead, walked right past me with 0% acknowledgment.
Mchael Kay can actually call a good game, but he digresses too much. I like the former ball player combos the best - with my favorite being Singleton and O'Neil. Lou Pinella is also doing a good job, much better than Tito on ESPN. Joe, Mick & Ted

While I was in the bathroom, Sterling was talking about the Penguins (and maybe something else not related to Yankee baseball). I could've sworn I heard him call the team a "ballclub".

Re: 2012 John Sterling Performance Thread
I'm not sure if anyone noticed last night but he clearly caught whatever Gardner, Cano and Nova had. I don't know if it was the flu or a bad cold, but he was clearly not himself last night.
And there wasn't even an el capitan or the grandy man can after their home runs.
He was also making more mistakes than usual, even for him.

Re: 2012 John Sterling Performance Thread
That's the thing about play by play guys on the radio - you won't miss them as long as the games are on the radio.
And you can rest assured that the Yankees will continue to broadcast Yankee games over the airwaves long after Mr Sterling is gone.
So the next guy that steps in (hopefully soon) will allow us to forget John Sterling....
THANK THE HIGH HEAVENS!

Re: 2012 John Sterling Performance Thread
Another note on last night's radio broadcast. I don't know if any of you heard it, but Kristie Ackert was the New York Daily News's writer on the Daily News 5th and was flat out brutal. She seemed like she was afraid to talk, had zero personality, and Waldman and Sterling had to almost force words out of her. It sounded like a girl meeting her boyfriend's parents for the 1st time.
