2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread

Care to elaborate?

Yanks have the 4th best bullpen ERA in the AL and have thrown the fewest inning of any pen in the AL.

All this despite losing Mo - the Greatest Closer of All Time for most of the seasom.
His top setup guy D-rob for ~6 weeks.
No having a key cog - Joba until now.

Only 2 Yankees Logan and Rapada rank high in appearances and both have less than 30 IP indicating he's used both as mostly LOOGY.

Soriano has logged 43 IP which tops all Yakee relievers but ranks just 35th in the AL.

I'm having a hard time seeming what Girardi could be doing better wrt pen management.

good points all around. my only concern is Boone being burnt out, but it is remarkable how good the bullpen has been without Mo and Joba, while spinning Rapada and Eppley into gold

Joe is one of the best big picture bullpen managers in the game. Given we had one of the worst prior to him, I'm more than happy. Also amazed that Mo's arm never fell off under Torre - that said, even he was beyond being that reckless.

I expect to see Phelps in tonight's game.

You were right. Girardi used him for the important 8th inning with the Yankees down by 5 runs.
The time to use him would have been to start the 6th inning with the Yankees still in the game.
But for reasons only known to Joe, Phelps does not get to pitch any important innings on this team. Its a shame because the guy gets people out.

I can't blame him for using Phelps this way for now, though. It's not desirable wasting the third best reliever in their bullpen (as of the last few weeks) as a long man.

They sent Phelps down last month so he could be stretched out and be able to pitch multiple innings. What was the point of doing that if Joe only uses him maybe once a week to pitch one inning?

That wasn't the case before the prior 7 days. So let's see how he's used the next 7 days as relievers go through periods in which their usage is either heavy or light.

Usually I'd agree but they are going to play a lot FO games in a row. Giving Ichiro a half day off in a game like this probably isn't bad idea.

Really great that after the 5th inning Joe used Eppley, Rapada and Joba but not the guy who is supposed to be the long man. Maybe had Phelps pitched from the 6th inning the Yankees win. We will never know. Really glad Joe used Phelps instead last night when the Yankees were down by 5 runs.

Phelps is on Girardi's list of relievers he won't use on b2b's. He essentially wasted him last night.

So why use Phelps in the 8th inning Monday with the Yankees down 5 runs if it means he can't be used the next game in a better situation. He could have used the great Eppley on Monday. No one would have missed seeing him on Tuiesday.
