Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
good move to bring Chavez for defense there.
I was somewhat worried he wouldn't despite how obvious it was.

Girardi wouldve gotten killed if the Yanks lost last night. What a crazy move, Ive never seen that before.

Neither agreed nor disagreed with the move. Could see the reasons for doing either. Didn't like the pinch running for Alex.

A-Rod 3 - 3 today (so far) after being moved up to 3rd in the lineup. Genius move by Girardi?

Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
2 things I loved about Girardi's moves today.
1. Putting A-Rod in the 3 spot.
2. Allowing Kuroda to try and get the CG SO.

Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
i loved the move also. avoid the best hitter and play to the pitcher's strength, both factors present here that were notably absent in the blockhead walk to SR game 1. plus it's late in the game, perfect time to take the gamble, in stark contrast to the other move. SSS for sure, but OPS against was also 1.300 vs 0.000. jones is also more apt to chase pitches, and he did just that and turned the AB around.

Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
I said before the opening game against Tampa that Alex should be hitting third because your best two hitters should be in the second and fourth spots. With Curtis hitting second, and Robbie hitting fourth, the balance feels right as the lineup doesn't give a manager an easy innings late in the game with a side specialist reliever.

Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
I'm glad for Joe that he made a couple of moves that didn't backfire, and yes as you see there was no book involved. I think that Joe should go with his gut instinct a little more, going by the book doesn't always work, especially if a player is slumping or recovering from injury.
Joe has also had some pretty hard luck, so far when trying his hand at maneuvering players around both defensively an on offense. So it's nice to see something work for a change...

Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
Did he explain the reason for the batting order change? Because at this stage in their respective careers, you'd have to say Cano is a prototypical 3-hitter and A-Rod a prototypical cleanup guy.
I guess I can imagine two reasons ... one, to let Cano give A-Rod some protection in the hopes that he gets some good pitches (though that sounds like a stretch), and two, to split up Granderson and Cano because the Angels have a particularly tough lefty in the pen (do they?).
It did seem to work out great, I just can't figure out why it was done in the first place."Baseball is about hope, not confidence." -- rajah

Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
Here's what Joe said about the lineup change:
http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2012/04/1...es-pregame-25/
The Yankees are 3-3, and they have made a change in the batting order. Instead of Curtis Granderson batting second, Robby Cano third and A-Rod fourth vs. the right-hander Ervin Santana, it’s Granderson, then A-Rod, then Cano 2-3-4. Joe Girardi said this will be his regular order now vs. righties. He rethought lefties Granderson and Cano batting back to back. A red flag went up during the Tampa Bay series, according to Girardi.
“We just feel that some of these clubs who have two left-handers and even the one left-hander, it makes it a little more difficult to navigate through,” Girardi said. “So we’re going to go with this and just try to make it more difficult on clubs when to bring the left-hander in.”

Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
If Girardi is going to insist on "resting" A-Rod at DH I really wish he would do it against RHP so Chavez could play 3B. I cringe when I see Nunez at 3B.

Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
I've come to the conclusion that Girardi is just a low IQ guy. He puts certain things on autopilot and never dares question it, and it seems to me he does that so his brain doesn't hurt too much. It's easy to out-manage someone like that
