Sky Kalkman writes for BP and seems to have a following within the sabermetrics community, so he does have some credibility. That doesn't necessarily mean that he has the answer.

I'm sure the analysis is sound, but I'm guessing it's influenced by years of managers (generally) putting good OBP guys in 1/2, the best all around hitter at #3, and their best slugger at #4 (with some variation/exceptions of course). That creates opportunity for #5.

If you created lineups out of a hat for 162 games, I'm going to go with the better hitter getting the sure-fire 30 to 40 extra at bats a year in the 3 hole rather than assume that the as the #5 hitter he would get materially more run production opportunity in spite of who hits in front of him.

I don't understand what's so wrong about not being happy with the lineup? He's had Cano batting 5th for far too long. It's not like this is some isolated incident.

The roster doesn't give Joe a lot of options, but geez, Nix at DH doesn't make me warm and fuzzy (of course that means he'll go 3-4 tonight with a couple of extra base hits) and the less said about McDonald the better.

Upon reflection. Perhaps not a huge blunder to bat Tex #3 !!

PS O Neill was all over this game from the booth, just great. Great move to let Martin hit there, a real shot in the arm.

Who do you want him to pitch? Eppley pitched two innings yesterday and he's not going to commit Robertson today unless it's tied or he has a lead and with the Angels with mostly right-handed hitters, he's kind of restricted with his left-handed pitchers. Sometimes, you have to save your bullets for a later fight.
