Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
Wondering why you didn't use Logan in the 6th instead of the 8th, then Phelps.
Fistpumping like a champion.

Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
Yep, we share the same concern. I'll probably get killed for saying this but, if ownership is truly serious about getting under 189 by 2014, at some point do the Yankees consider becoming "sellers" (e.g., try to move Granderson and/or Swisher) to try to net some MLB ready (or near ready) prospects?
David Ortiz tested positive for performance enhancing drugs in 2003.

Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
That honestly might be the only way of improving the team over the next few years. I know people dislike Swisher and he doesnt hit in the playoffs....but he's a mid .800 OPS guy since he's been here. That is not easily replaced. So when he walks after the season, and the team doesnt wanna spend money on the position....who is in RF? There is nobody on the farm ready. So are we stuck signing some cheap stop gap player, who's past his prime? I'll vomit if we have an OF of Gardner, Granderson, Jones or Gardner, Granderson, Ibanez next year. But thats likely what will happen--we'll pickup a late 30's player on a 1 year deal.
Maybe its just me, but I look at the roster next year and I see alot of problems. RF....C....DH...the rotation. Not to mention the continued decline of older players like ARod. I really would love anyone to explain to me how these holes get filled when a) we're not gonna invest in the FA market and b) we have nobody in the system ready to come up.

Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
The answer is not promising - be bad enough for long enough to get high draft picks and develop them (develop - NY?
) Like the years that led to Jeter/Posada/Andy/Mo? But as someone said, the price structure of the stadium these days does not really work with that game plan!

Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
Swisher is on the wrong side of 30 and is a complimentry player, not someone you build your offense around. IMO, he does not fit the profile of a player that you give a long term contract. According to Micheal Kay, he asked for a Jayson Werth type deal when the Yankees explored an extension of the winter. If someone is foolish enough to offer him anything close to that type of deal you wish him well on his new team. I would not commit anything more than 2-3 years at AAV of about 10 million.

Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
Can't afford to trade Soriano, since we don't know for certain whether Mo will be able to return next year. However if he ends up being the closer, I would think Soriano might opt out after this year to become a closer somewhere else if it does seem that Mo will return.

Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
Then, you are all for giving up on trying to win this season, because no team that would want either Swisher or Soriano mid-season is going to trade something that is going to help a team win this year.
I know the team has not looked great, but there is no way that the Yankee FO is going to tell the fans that they have given up on this season, nor should they.

Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
lol what?
His WAR has been fantastic every year for 7 straight years, save the one year he crashed in Chicago under Ozzy and they were stupid enough to trade him to us for Betimet
Year/ WAR/ Value
2006 3.9 $14.6
2007 3.9 $15.9
2008 1.3 $3.6
2009 3.2 $14.2M
2010 4.1 $16.4M
2011 3.8 $17.0M
You think he's going to get signed for a 2/$20 or 3/$30 deal?
He's going to get an AAV around $14 or $15 for 4-5 years. He's a great player.A fool and his money can throw one heck of a party!

Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
I'm not giving up on this year. But w the salary cut which is looming and no position prospects in the upper levels it's a way to try to avoid a prolonged dark period

Re: 2012 Joe Girardi Performance Thread
I think Art is low on what Swisher will get but I think you are on the high end. I think something in the middle a 3 or 4 year deal with a ~$12.5M AAV seems like what he'll get. He's younger and less injury prone but not as good as Carlos Beltran who got 2/$26M from the Cards last year.
Baseball is life;
the rest is just details.
