Re: WFAN: Yanks trade Kontos for Catcher Chris Stewart
This doesn't make any sense.
Why would we want Stewart over Cervelli as our backup catcher?
Cervelli is better, isn't he?

Re: WFAN: Yanks trade Kontos for Catcher Chris Stewart
CBS updated the news. Rotowire has not yet. Interesting move. His minor league stats have him as a .350 OBP guy. Which is slightly ahead of Cervelli. We'll see how it translates.
In Cashman I trust.

Re: WFAN: Yanks trade Kontos for Catcher Chris Stewart
This makes zero sense. WTF Cashman. Kontos could have been a useful bullpen piece.

Re: WFAN: Yanks trade Kontos for Catcher Chris Stewart
Cervs has options. Romine is projected to be worse than realized. At least, that's what I am reading on twitter.

Re: WFAN: Yanks trade Kontos for Catcher Chris Stewart
Kind of a confusing deal to me.
2:32pm: The Yankees have acquired Stewart in exchange for right-hander George Kontos, reports MLB.com's Bryan Hoch (on Twitter).
Kontos, 26, allowed two runs in six innings for New York last September, his big league debut. He pitched to a 2.62 ERA with 9.2 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 89 1/3 Triple-A innings.
2:13pm: Shea hears that Stewart is being traded to the Yankees, but it is not official and the team hasn't announced anything yet (Twitter link).
1:53pm: The Giants will trade Chris Stewart according to John Shea of The San Francisco Chronicle (on Twitter). The deal is pending at the moment. The backstop is out of options.
Stewart, 30, hit .204/.283/.309 in 183 plate appearances with the Giants last season after Buster Posey's injury. A release from the team says the trade will be announced later today. The details are unknown.

"Because Stewart no longer has any options, Francisco Cervelli has been optioned to Triple-A to make room on the roster."

I Just heard an interview with Cervelli on WFAN and he was pissed.
Can't say that I blame him.

Re: WFAN: Yanks trade Kontos for Catcher Chris Stewart
Almost makes sense to me. I would MUCH rather have Cervelli working with the kids down in AAA, as he has experience with the Yanks, will very likely be the back-up later in the year, and does know how to call a ML game with legit ML pitchers. If the choices are Cervelli, Stewart, Gustavo Molina, and Craig Tatum, as much as it sucks for him I want Cervelli in AAA where he can catch prospects every day and play every day. I predict as soon as Romine is healthy Stewart is gone and Cervelli is back in the bigs.
The almost is why they traded Kontos for a rental back-up catcher.

Re: WFAN: Yanks trade Kontos for Catcher Chris Stewart
I'm so why not trade for an aaa catcher
To replace romaine instead of demoting
Cervelli.
Maybe another trade is coming..
Maybe Cervelli is being traded soon.

If this isn't part of some larger (or at least better) roster move, then no me gusta.

Re: WFAN: Yanks trade Kontos for Catcher Chris Stewart
Call me crazy but while I feel for Cervelli, I'm not much worried about how he feels. He's a backup catcher and we gotta do what's best for the team. I trust that Stewart was looked into pretty well and if they feel he's the better option I'll go with it. I have faith in our management.
In Cashman I trust.

Re: WFAN: Yanks trade Kontos for Catcher Chris Stewart
When you're told the roster spot is yours, then a couple hours before they have to turn in rosters, you're demoted? I'd be pretty pissed, too. If you notice, Cervelli has said he is disappointed but has also said that he's going to go down there and work.
