Right now it's not pretty; they're smoking the ball off him. Even the outs are being hit hard.

Re: 2012 David Phelps Performance Thread
This was the was appearance that he had to work. He showed enough to think he can be successful for us for a while. I doubt he gets his short in the rotation unless someone gets injured. Andy will replace Garcia and I suspect that Phil will be given til at least the break to make or break himself.

Re: 2012 David Phelps Performance Thread
I think the Yankees are foolish to not give the start to Phelps the next time Garcia's turn comes up. More ability at the moment, more upside. They should really be looking to trade Garcia ASAP for a bag of balls, saving that money for when they inevitably need to improve the bench or backfill for an injury.

Re: 2012 David Phelps Performance Thread
It may sound logical to swap Garcia and Phelp's roles except if Garcia (or Hughes) can't get out of the first two innings cleanly, they will have the same problems in their first two innings as a reliever. I think Hughes will be effective out of the pen but Garcia may need to be released when Pettitte is ready.

Re: 2012 David Phelps Performance Thread
Agree with this. I do not think Freddy's stuff (???) translates well to a bullpen role. He does not throw hard enough to get by for a couple of innings on pure smoke, and his off-speed stuff does not fool anyone unless he is pin-point sharp. I also think he is out-of-here when Andy returns, possibly in 2+ weeks.
But I also think that Phelps will not replace Garcia for this short time-frame, as they don't want to jerk the kid back and forth for such a short period. I would hope they learned their lessons well from Joba.

Re: 2012 David Phelps Performance Thread
I would greatly prefer that they do not yank Phelps back and forth. Keep him in 1 role. Since Andy is on the way, and IMO, Hughes gets a very long leash, I do not see a spot opening for Phelps in the rotation. So keep Garcia there for 1 more start or so, until Andy is ready to give 100 pitches. Andy is pitching tomorrow, 04/25/12, in Trenton. Assuming he goes 5 days later, he would next pitch on 04/30/12. One more after that is 05/05/12. So, Andy should be up here for a start around 05/10/12.
Yankees are off on 04/26/12 (this Thursday) and on Monday, 05/07/12. So they could skip Garcia against Detroit this weekend, pitch him in game 2 against the Orioles on 05/01/12, and again in KC on Sunday, 05/06/12. Hopefully, his off-speed stuff will be on vs. the Birds, and he will be OK against that free-swinging team. KC has a slew of kids in their lineup, so maybe he could get by. Then Andy pitches the next time Garcia's slot comes up, on 05/12/12 against the Mariner's. Nice team for Andy to break in with, as they may be the worst offensive team in the Majors right now.

Re: 2012 David Phelps Performance Thread
Now that Pineda is out for the season, I would like to see Phelps get a shot at one of the rotation spots. I'm inpressed with what I see so far.

He's not looking so good tonight.
