Made the 25 man roster.
No offense, but as the long guy may his appearances be few and far between.Baseball is life;

He's better than being deemed a garbage innings pitcher. Hopefully he can be used in the Mendoza/Aceves role once he gets some innings under his belt.

Re: 2012 David Phelps Performance Thread
Long guys get it generally when a starter gets knocked around. Personally I'd like to see Yankee starters go deep into the game and avoid the long guy as much as possible.
Again I've got nothing against Phelps and I hope he picthes well when ever called upon. But I'd much rather see starter hand ball to D-rob or Soriano for the 8th and give the ball to Mo in th 9th.
I know that plan doesn't always happen but I would like that to be the norm more often than not.
and teknic, totally agree, happy to see a kid get a shot instead of useless retread.Baseball is life;

Re: 2012 David Phelps Performance Thread
Well yeah, I'm not saying he should instantly be moved into the Mendoza/Aceves role. He should earn that.
I guess your post confused me a bit. I couldn't tell if you are low on Phelps' ability or convinced that he's only going to be used in garbage time regardless of how he pitches.
I was just saying that I think he's a better pitcher then your typical long man/garbage inning guy.

I'm not off to a good start with the JDP prediction contest. (Is it just me, or does it seem like since his recent suspension he's more or less abandoned the forum?)

Re: 2012 David Phelps Performance Thread
Oh yeah his minor league numbers look good and I'd be happy if he blossoms with the big club but I can sense the inevitable "how can he pitch good when Girardi keeps miss using him in gargbage time" arguments if he struggles.
My comment was more about hoping the Yanks have very few garbage innings to allocate.Baseball is life;

Re: 2012 David Phelps Performance Thread
Well, it is a rational argument if the guy only gets to pitch once every couple of weeks. No pitcher is going to look good in that scenario. We've seen it before. If he pitches somewhat consistently for an ML reliever & gets rocked, I doubt you'll hear anyone talk about being "misused."
But this has yet to happen so there's no point in speculating.

Re: 2012 David Phelps Performance Thread
I agree it is not the easiest but plenty of big league picthers have cut their theeth this way.
Other then one spectatular blowup in Cincy last year, Noesi was very effective with sporadic appeances the first half of last year earning more innings as the season went on.Baseball is life;

Re: 2012 David Phelps Performance Thread
David Phelps to me is like the starting pitching version of David Robertson because of their respective draft positions(14th and 17th round draft picks) and how they they shot up through the system with no hype and very good numbers.

Re: 2012 David Phelps Performance Thread
I thought/was hoping DJ Mitchell was going to get the nod. Phelps has the higher ceiling as a starter, so I figured let him keep starting in the minors while Mitchell languishes in the 1-appearance-per-week role.
In any case, DP must be pumped. Good for him; I hope he tears it up.

Re: 2012 David Phelps Performance Thread
I like both sides of the long reliever debate. Its always:
- You can't waste a guy like him in low-leverage/sporadic long relief
vs
- Why do we have such crappy long relievers, these guys couldn't make it in any other role
Its like the position-player bench debate. Everyone wants to have a great bench, but great bench players want to become marginal starters on a team that will sign them

He got his first two career batters out including striking out Elliot Johnson, the first batter he faced.

Re: 2012 David Phelps Performance Thread
Liked the look of his curve all last night. Threw it well for both called strikes and the swinging strike for the K. Throw in good fastball command and there is enough the to be effective at the major league level. A good start.
