Which North American city has the best Jewish Deli?

IMHO - Deli's in NY like Katz's have become tourist traps.

Best I have found in the US lately is near Hartford - Rein's Deli

    www.reinsdeli.com

Best overall believe it or not is in Montréal - Schwartz's

    http://www.schwartzsdeli.com/poster_eng.html

    Chicago does have Manny's

Chisox, the word is "Which", not "What".

Are you referring to Jewish Kosher or Jewish non-Kosher? If Kosher, then meat or dairy? Katz isn't Kosher, but it is Jewish.

What does Mike Ditka have to do w/Which or What? Or Jewish deli? Is that the way he speaks?

BTW, wot do they serve in those other cities that we don't have here?

We've got smoked meat also. Virgil's on Times Square has tons of smoked meats, mostly pork.

That looks like one of those Carnegie Deli 1 lb sandwiches. There's enough in there to make 3-4 stacked sandwiches. The lack of lettuce, tomato or pickles only makes that a touristy special, or some catering delight fer the outta town clients.

I've been to Rein's Deli and I have to admit it is awesome.

But I do like the fact that in NY there are deli's everywhere that you can get cold cuts and salads and heroes and stuff. It's, at least in my experience from the states I've visited, a nice little luxury.

I've never had a hot pepper on a sandwich before.

I guess the frites/fries are to stay. Tomatoes & pickles go soggy quuickly.

When I get a sandwich, I generally only have lettuce, mayo & mustard. If a nice place, I'll add a few mushroom slices & an avocado slice to turkey breast.

Wot do they call a sandwich on a long roll by you? A hero, hoagie or submarine?

The City That Never Sleeps also has 24/7 delis also. Try getting a gourmet sammich elsewhere at 3am.

Well Brad, Manhatten is not the only place in NY.

Out here on Long Island, there's a 24/7 deli on route 111 that has the best chicken salad in the world. Put it on a super egg bagel and

How many times I've taken the trip at 3 am, 4 am, just for that I can't even count.

3 AM? If I'm even awake then I'm thinking a bacon egg and cheese, not a pastromi on rye!

Which would be available for you. Brad is right, the 24/7 delis in NY is an awesome luxury. I've never really seen that anywhere else. I've been up and down the entire east coast and it's a rarity to find it anywhere.

I'm pretty sure (but not positive) Rein's is now open 24 hours.

EDIT: not quite. 7 AM until midnight.

I do suggest if anyone gets a chance and is in CT to check out Rein's Deli. It is worth the time to stop for food.

This will likely end up in POOC but try their garlic pickles. I usually buy some to take home.

We've got a few in my town. The busier traveled avenues will have one. By me, the deli at Journal Square is 24/7. Of course, no hot food at that time. However, we have 2 diners in my area.

Further in the "better" part of Jersey City, there are more open longer hours, and not always by the transportation places. If the residents are always up, then the delis are always open. By City Hall further uptown (and closer to Manhattan), there's a 24/7 deli.

Hoboken is the one that has the nightlife, tho. They have all kinds of 24 hr places down there. Also more parked cars in a square mile town than you could ever imagine.

We have a few 24/7 Mickey D's, and 2 pharmaceutical drug stores (as opposed to the idiots/drug dealers) that are open 24/7 (the Duane Reade is actually open limited hours on Sat & Sun).

Carnegie Delis makes their own smoked meats, I remember reading, and that's one of NYC's best delis, and is open 24/7. If you want to pay $20 for a humongous slab of thinly sliced pastrami, then just open wide and ante up the buckeroo$.

All depends upon the day of the week. At 3am on a Wednesday, I'm thinking hittin' the sack and countin' ZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzz's.

At 3am on a Fri/Sat nite, it's likely breakfast, since I may not have had this earlier. Sometimes, I just want an extra breakfast. At that time, it's almost appropriate. Either that or a burger 'n' fries.
